Mamma Mia! Becomes England's Highest-Grossing Movie Ever image
I've known for a while that something was up between Britain and Mamma Mia!. The ultimate cheesy musical was performing well over there long after it left theaters here, and even had a series of "sing-along" viewings in theaters across the country. But I really wasn't prepared for this: according to Playbill, Mamma Mia! has become their highest grossing movie of all time, besting the record set by Titanic.

The Meryl Streep dance-a-thon has grossed £69,068,073, which comes out to about $105 US. I know, I know, that's chump change here-- Mamma Mia made more than that in the U.S., and hell, The Dark Knight made that in a weekend. But Britain has 60 million people compared to our 300 million, and hey, maybe they don't just go to the movies in droves on opening weekend the way we do. Something in Mamma Mia! struck a nerve, though-- was it the Pierce Brosnan singing? The Colin Firth in a leather dog collar? The shirtless men dancing in flippers? Just when I was starting to think that the British might not be that different from us after all...
