Like Zack Snyder, Marcus Nispel has built a career by remaking or adapting other properties-- Snyder had his Dawn of the Dead remake and 300 and Watchmen adaptations, Nispel had remakes of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Friday the 13th and the upcoming Conan the Barbarian (even 2007's Pathfinder was loosely based on a Norwegian film of the same name). But when Snyder ventured into original material for Sucker Punch it was a disaster; should we expect the same of Nispel, as he prepares to direct a film based on his own idea for the first time?

According to Deadline Nispel will next be directing Backmask, a film based on his idea that "involves paranoid, possession and the paranormal." Fittingly, he's going to be working with Paranormal Activity and Insidious producer Steven Schneider; the $10 million budgeted film will be shooting this summer, presumably even before Conan the Barbarian opens on August 19. With independent financing in place Nispel didn't have to wait to see how Conan did to start making his next picture, but it is interesting that he didn't at least wait it out to see if he could get a bigger budget; does he know something we don't about how well Conan might do, or is he just like any director who loves his job and anxious to get behind the camera again?

Nispel is holding the plot details pretty close to the vest for now, but Bloody Disgusting actually had a lot of details when they first reported this news last week, so hats off to them! Here's the plot description they reported last week:

"During a sex, drugs, and rock-fueled party, six small-town teenagers find an old vintage record and decide to play it backwards in order to listen for any subliminal/satanic messages. Lo and behold, a seemingly malevolent spirit quickly infiltrates the group, wreaking havoc as it moves from one body to another. Eventually, however, it's revealed that the spirit in question is actually trying to convey a message....and that the real source of horror isn't particularly paranormal, but rather something (or someone) much closer to home."
