Despite the cool trailer released tonight for The Incredible Hulk, it appears the movie may be in a bit of trouble. Rumor has it there is some conflict going on behind the scenes between actor/writer Edward Norton and the Marvel Studio execs – conflict specifically about the cut of the movie, which is still being edited together.
Nikki Finke revealed the issues going on between Norton and Marvel, although her piece doesn’t solidly place the blame on either side. Marvel may not be listening to Norton, which would be a big mistake. After all, he helped cut together the trailer, which is smartly assembled. He also doctored the script a bit, so clearly he knows the characters and story. Plus there’s that work he did on Frieda and his own Keeping the Faith, giving Norton his share of credit. On the other side, the actor is notoriously picky, which may be contributing to, if not outright causing, the problems between the two.
Marvel has had enough failures and lame releases at this point that I find myself forced to side with Norton, despite not knowing exactly what the problems are. If his script work and desired cut of the film are indicated by the trailer he helped assemble (and which Norton was reportedly happy with), then let the actor stay involved with the picture and help with the final edit. Obviously he knows what he’s doing. The last thing Marvel needs is another failed Hulk picture, which would probably doom the character to the point that we wouldn’t see him on film again for quite some time – we’re talking a disaster of Batman and Robin proportions, and nobody wants that.
