It may kill a lot of people every year, but alcohol, when used responsibly, is one of the greatest things on this planet. Is there anything in this world that goes better with an amazing cigar than a nice aged scotch? Is there a better way to end a long work week than with an ice cold beer? The answer to both questions is a resounding no. Hell, alcohol will even be the bond that keeps Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Aaron Paul together in the new James Ponsoldt film Smashed.

Variety reports that the two actors are now in talks for the staring roles in the project, while Octavia Spencer and Nick Offerman are in negotiations for supporting parts. In the movie, which the trade says is "loosely described as a modern day take on Blake Edwards' 1962 drama Days of Wine and Roses," Winstead and Paul play a married couple who have a mutual appreciation for the sauce, but things go sideways when Winstead signs up for Alcoholics Anonymous. Should they sign on, Spencer will play Winstead's sponsor and Offerman will be the assistant principal at the school where Winstead teaches. The project will be Ponsolft's follow-up to 2006's Off The Black and will be based on a script that he wrote with Susan Burke.

Parks and Recreation's Ron Swanson may be in a movie about characters that love booze and he's not starring? On some level that feels like blasphemy, but oh well. Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Aaron Paul are two of the better young actors around, so I can't imagine that it will be a horrific mistake. That said, can somebody please make a feature-length Ron Swanson biopic?
