Mary J. Blige And Tom Cruise Up For Rock Of Ages Roles![]()
Rock of Ages is one of those jukebox musicals that bring in a ton of money on Broadway but don't exactly feel like must-sees-- do I really need to see a show rehashing a bunch of 80s hair metal songs, when I can catch someone singing "Don't Stop Believin'" at karaoke any given evening? But the nice thing about movie adaptations of musicals is that they are cheap to see, and the Rock of Ages sounded like some potential fun, even before they started lining up some name-brand cast to fill the ranks.
Confirming a rumor that surfaced in late October, Vulture is reporting that Tom Cruise has indeed been offered the role of Bourbon Room owner Dennis Dupree, but he's now more interested in playing Stacee Jaxx, a slightly bigger role as the rock star who comes to play at the soon-to-be-closed Bourbon Room and turns into the big villain of the show. In addition the producers are eyeing Mary J. Blige for the role of Justice Charlier, the owner of the "gentleman's club" the Venus Club on the Sunset Strip. Adam Shankman, who brought another musical to life with 2008's Hairspray, is set to direct the film, with original stage writer Chris D'Arienze on board as a co-writer. The film has been in development for over a year now, and with the musical still going strong on Broadway they have plenty of time to cash in on its success, so who knows when we'll see any of this actually happen. |
