Perhaps because so many high profile novel adaptations litter the pages of Cinema Blend and other news sources every month, the more under the radar ones tend to get lost in the shuffle - at least until they premiere at festivals and people find out whether or not it’s worth their time. As these less than famous adaptations go, the following one has piqued my interested far more than most. The source work is called Small Apartments, and it centers around a protagonist described as Ignatius J. Reilly-like. Now, this is note worthy for two reasons. First, Ignatius J. Reilly, from the novel A Confederacy Of Dunces, is one of the better and more memorable characters in 20th Century fiction, and second, because A Confederacy Of Dunces has never had an adaptation ever go into production (despite many, many attempts). At one point or another, John Belushi, John Candy, Chris Farley and Will Ferrell were all in talks to play the main character, but we all know how those attempts ended up.

Anyway, the main character, this Ignatius J. Reilly-eesque dude, lives in a small apartment and pines for a life away from the big city. Soon, he finds conflict with his neighbors, and eventually, this leads to murder. Who exactly is murdered and why is anyone’s guess as I haven’t read the novel, but I am definitely intrigued. If you're not, let me hit you with this hot fact I just learned from reading an Amazon review: one of the characters collects fingernails and an alphorn is somehow involved.

According to Coming Soon, Matt Lucas, the guy that played Tweedledee and Tweedledum in Alice In Wonderland, has already boarded, and Jonas Akerlund will direct. If all goes to plan, Small Apartments will begin shooting in March. Let’s hope this does more than just slips by the wayside.
