Just when we were ready to resign it to the depths of development hell, the long rumored Magnum P.I. movie is apparently back to being rumored. Our friends over at FilmRot have picked up a rumor from Teletext UK which says that not only is the movie ready to go, but they’ve locked up a cast as well.
They say it’s been handed over to Dodgeball director Rawson Marshall Thurber, who has finished his redraft of the script adaptation of the classic ‘Magnum P.I.’ television show which made Tom Selleck and his glorious mustache famous. Sadly, Selleck will not return to playing Thomas Magnum. Instead, the word is that good old boy Matthew McConaughey has the part, with Steve Zahn as his friend Rick, Tyrese Gibson as chopper flying T.C., and William H. Macy as his British landlord Higgins. They’re sticking with the idea of Magnum and his friends being war veterans, but since so much time has passed now they’re veterans of the Iraq war.
If any of this is true, it’s kind of a shock. We haven’t heard anything about the project in months and now it just drops out of nowhere neatly packaged with a little bow on top.
I love the idea of William H. Macy as Higgins, as long as he plays the character as British and it doesn’t really matter who they get to play Rick and T.C. Zah and Gibson work. But I’m not sure what to think of Matthew McConaughey as Magnum. Can the guy grow a great mustache? How does he look in a Hawaiian shirt and a pair of short-shorts? Most of all, can he ditch the folksy southern accent? Thomas Magnum is not a hick.

My name is Zefrey Love, We agree,we love tom selleck as magnum to,but matthew turns out to be a good actor too.funny, some of my relatives knew matthew before he ever was a star in a movie. My stepfathers sister shirley, and her daughter deanne used to have him visit,he lived on the same street they did.he would come over and tell them just watch, your gonna see me in the movies!I don't know him personally but I like some of his movies.just wondering I think the first one was( dazed and confused).Good job matthew!
We love you Magnum Tom Selleck,we have an autografed picture of you in our restroom hanging.
There are iconic roles you just can't mess with when doing a remake. Back when the originals were done the actor or actress selected for the part totally fit the part. Not like today where they will throw a popular name and body at a role.
I have seem Matthews movies, the most recent one at my wifes behest, U571. She thought I would like it because it was a military movie andhe played an officer. He totally sucked at his role. His acting ability is so shallow he could NOT pull it off. A total slam to the Navy and Academy Graduates.
He gets put in roles like this and Magnum PI because women will watch him just because he is "hot". Not because he can act. If you add up his own fans ratings for all of his movies. They give him barely a B. Make al the excuses you want for hime, bottom line he just cannot act.
As Magnum PI, no way will he be able to pull that off. He doesn't have the look or the skill. The part was made for Tom Selleck so you have to get someone with that type of attitude on screen. Hugh Jackman (Wolverine X-Men) would have been a much better choice for the part. He has the look and he can act and he has both guy and chic appeal.
Matthew is the David Becham of the big screen. All sizzle no steak, All hype with no filler.
I will not go see this movie! The original show with Tom Selleck was the best! Hollywood has done nothing but turn out trash the last decade. I mean get real,Starsky&Hutch,Dukes of Hazzard, The honeymooners,etc...Just CRAP! Quit trying to remake these shows because the originals were great. And Matthew Mcconaughey turns my stomach. But I am sure some idiot will watch the movie,,lol
Matthew McConaughey...NOT! I agree with Jon for the same exact reasons. That would be the worst decision possible. I don't expect Tom to come back and reprise the role, but not Matthew. Dig deeper, please!
Total waste of time and money. If Selleck and the original cast are not coming back Magnum PI fans won't go see it. Personally I think the idea of MCConaughey playing Magnum is a joke! If they aren't going to use the original cast they may as well save the money or make a tv movie version of Family Ties.
Trying to compare the comeback of Tom Selleck to the comeback of Sean Connery and Harrison Ford is totally asinine and an insult to Selleck. Connery's comeback in "NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN" wasn't all that great. It was slightly embarrassing and a tired remake of THUNDERBALL. Big deal. Not only that, but it has been said that no one can play Bond like Connery and yet everyone now is talking Daniel Craig, who in one movie completely took over the role. Harrison Ford is fooling himself if he thinks he can pull off Indiana Jones again and that's even if they address the age issue which the movie has promised it would do. Oh,that will be fun to watch. Maybe Indy will be wearing diapers, too. Selleck had his chance and was offered many TV reunion movies but he turned them down. Okay,so much for that.
SAHARA wasn't a lame attempt on Dirk Pitt, just underrated and the victim of overzealoius sabotoge by an egocentric author. When Clive Cussler went on his crybaby rampage,Paramount regretably got cold feet in the marketing dept. Too bad. They missed an opportunity to have a great francise in their stable. The movie also proved Matt McConaughey is a great action hero for the age and a perfect fit for Magnum. If Daniel Craig can steal the mantle from Connery then McConaughey can lift it from Selleck quite easily. Playing Magnum doesn't require all that much range. Steve Zahn will be a great Rick and he was equally good as Al in SAHARA. Enough of the curley black hair crap, please. Zahn embodied Al and was even liked by the real life Al,the personal friend of Cussler's who was the model for Giordino. So I say, bring on the new Magnum and let Selleck rest on his laurels.
I think the idea of Matthew McConaughey playing Thomas Magnum makes about as much sense as Ryan Seacrest playing the role of Hercules - it doesn't. The guy playing Magnum has to show the range the character needs (battle scarred war vet to comic foil and back to humanistic leading man) and McConaughey lacks the one essential ingredient for Magnum - humility. McConaughey always struts through his movies with enough arrogance that it make him almost unlikeable. If ever he were the butt of joke it's "Oh, I'm just throwing this pathetic character a bone, I'll get my swagger back in a second". Selleck never took himself seriously and never did the leading man thing where he made anybody look like an idiot 100% of the time. He always poked fun at himself and looked real doing it. Most Magnum plots were really out there but it was his sense of reality humanity and the chemistry between the other stars that made the show what it was.
Sahara was lame attempt at capturing the Dirk Pitt novels and he was miscast in that. Steve Zahn was barely a second bannana role and looked NOTHING like Giordano, but he at least would make a passable Rick. I like Macy but Higgins, c'mon he totally wrong height. The fans are what has kept momentum of this project afloat all of these years so give them what they want - the original cast. And don't give me this marketing to a young audience BS. Most of the people with money are over 25 and will go see the right movie. Hollywood markets the stink out of skunk so they could market an original cast movie. Connery came back to play bond, both Ford and Stallone are back, so it's ridculous to even consider a new cast especially with a crew from a movie that tanked at the box office. If the studio is so concerned with box office receipts why gamble with a bunch of actors who have so recently proven they have no bankability.
Great casting !! This team of actors really work well together and are a perfect fit for MAGNUM. With the furure of the Dirk Pitt movies a foregone conclusion thanks to the negative and overzealous reaction by an author with a Napoleon complex,it's good to see a producer who recognizes the potential of their chemistry and will use them to good advantage. That is something vastly overlooked by Clive Cussler. As talented as Tom Selleck is,he is now too old for the part so Matt McConaughey and company are a GREAT choice for the start of a excellent francise. "Recyling the cast of SAHARA"? Hardly ! Finally McConaughey and his crew are out from under the opressive thumb of Cussler and now we can start to enjoy them in a better fomat.
Great choice !! The cast fits the concept of MAGNUM
perfectfully !! Since these guys can't make Dirk Pitt movies anymore thanks to Clive Cussler's negative and overzealous lawsuit,it will be nice to see them cooking up a better francise in this genre. What was it--summer of 2008??--Can't wait !! Besides,Tom Selleck is way too old and should just stick to westerns.
