Matthew McConaughey Considering Magnum P.I.

By Josh Tyler: 2008-04-04 15:07:38
Matthew McConaughey Considering Magnum P.I. Rumors don’t die, they just get recycled by other people. It was in January of last year that Mathew McConaughey was first rumored to be in the running for the role of Thomas Magnum in the long planned Magnum P.I. movie. As any Magnum fan worth their salt will tell you, there’s only one guy who should be playing this role, and his name is Tom Selleck. But Hollywood doesn’t care, and McC’s name was thrown in the hat with dozens of other rumored actors like George Clooney, and we haven’t heard much since.

Well now the McConaughey for Magnum rumor is back, courtesy of EW. They say it’s more than a rumor this time, and that he’s actually been offered the part by Universal Pictures. Whether or not he’ll do it apparently depends on if he likes the script, which he’s currently reading. And right there is where I start to doubt this thing, because I’m pretty sure Matthew McConaughey is much too busy smoking weed to do things like “read”. Maybe he got a spoken word podcast version.

EW says they think he’s a “sweet match” for Thomas Magnum who they describe as a “reluctant detective”. Except Magnum was reluctant, not lazy, and lazy is just about all Matt McC is any good at playing these days. Thomas Magnum was smart, sarcastic, dashing, and a little damaged. Yeah the show was one of those gimmicky 80s detective shows, but Magnum had more depth than your average Simon & Simon character. Even if he can grow a great mustache, McConaughey seems like a heinous disaster. But then anyone not named Selleck is an epic fail. On the other hand, Magnum did take his shirt off a lot, and we all know Matt is pretty great at that.

  • who cd like as good as selleck?and that body!!
  • I think Jeffrey Dean Morgan would be a hundred times better than Matt McC as Magnum!
  • If Stallone can do return as Rocky and Rambo and be a success
And if Ford can do Indiana Jones again
    Why not Tom Selleck?
Lets face it when the original people do the films they are far better than all the films that have used a new cast (eg, stasky and Hutch, Knight Rider 2000, Miami Vice- were all rubbish)
  • 05/04/08 I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Larry Manetti by e-mail a few times, I got an autographed pic and he sold me one of his personal Magnum books autographed from his personal collection, I asked him about a movie on the show, he said there is no current plan for it. I do agree that there is no one to play the roles, it would have to be the original cast...The last time the original cast got together was last October for an episode of Vegas which Tom stars in now. I asked Larry about Tom doing it, but he said Tom wont do it again...best to leave it as it was on top....but like many fans out there would agree, the movie with the originals would do well at the box office. By the way, Larry told me that he said NO at the very end of the last show! Rick could never get hitched...
  • SAY IT ISN"T SO!!! There is only ONE Magnum and Tom Selleck cannot be replaced. I will definitely protest by any means and will NOT waste my time even considering such a farce. And McConaughey isn't even CLOSE.
  • Tom Selleck is Magnum period. Here is a heartbreaking excerpt from a Cigar Aficianado Profile from the mid-90's (Tom was actually the profile for last December too), Tom discusses the Magnum that should have been made. They could still put a great movie together with Magnum, but the show ended very well. (Wasn't Did you See the Sunrise, but it was good) Check out the link though, it is a great article, Tom Selleck is the man.

...Selleck also tried to sell a movie idea to Universal Pictures--a feature in which he would have again played the role of Magnum, but with a switch. In the movie, Magnum would be in the Navy (which he returned to at the end of the series). Selleck's close friend, novelist Tom Clancy, would have written the story. But much to the actor's disappointment, the movie never happened.

"Universal was interested," Selleck says. "I went to them after Mr. Baseball because I heard about all the movies that were being developed based on television series, such as The Fugitive and Maverick. I thought a "Magnum" movie would be a kind of slam dunk, because the show is still seen in 90 countries--we have a huge audience. At first I thought they weren't talking to me because they thought I would hold them up pricewise. So I said I would be fair with them. I thought it was a no-brainer, a no-downside movie.

"But they wanted to know how we could create a perception that this is a big movie. So I mulled it over and called Tom Clancy, who is a friend and was a real fan of the show. Magnum's going back to being a Navy Seal was right up Tom's alley. I asked him what he thought would be a hot global issue a year from then--this was a couple of years ago--and he said nuclear proliferation in North Korea," Selleck says. So I went back and asked Universal if having Tom Clancy would create enough of a perception that it's a big movie, and they said yes. And what happened then, in my opinion, was a lot of foot-dragging. What they would have had a year ago was a very timely movie that would have dealt with how the North Koreans got their plutonium, in a very credible Clancyesque way. That's a pretty good movie."

Selleck believes that Universal "thought that things weren't going too well for me--or at least that's how it appeared--and that a much safer bet would be to get me to make four 'Magnums' a year for television. That would reinvigorate the franchise, they thought. But I won't do that, particularly now. The only way they're going to get hold of this Magnum character is to make a feature film."

  • I only want to go on record as saying I havent seen response of this magnitude ever on this site. Even the Tyler Perry backlash wasnt this passionate...
What does that say about Selleck? I think it says the fans believe in him, even nearly 30 years later.
Better start hitting the gym Tom, you might have to fight for this one.

  • Oh ... my ... GOD!

I fear this will wind up like the recent "Dukes of Hazzard" and "Miami Vice" films. Please write a great script. And if it's not great, just don't release the film. And get Selleck on board, if not as the lead character, at least let him have some strong say on how the script should go.
  • Having Selleck around and not using him for this role is like having Jesus available for a role in a Biblical movie and casting Owen Wilson. Tom is Magnum, Magnum is Tom. This is the biggest "no-duh" I've ever heard of. True Magnum fans will boycott, teeny-boppers that want to see a movie with Matthew McBongwater will make the movie successful. Hollywood wins, Magnum fans will bend over and take it up the old Ferarri tailpipe. Sucks being right all the time.

  • Hwood or who ever is doing the casting needs to get their head out of where the sun dont shine!! There is only one Magnum P.I and thats Tom Selle ck. ok if for some reason you have to put some one else in there Matthew McCon. is NOT the one for the part you'll not see me at that movie
  • "McConaughey has all the right qualities"--True, on paper. But Magnum PI was one of those "you had to be there" shows.

On paper, it's a cheesy '80s TV show about a P.I., but true Magnum (aka Tom Selleck!!!) fans know that Magnum was not "a P.I." --he was THE "Private
Investigator" with a unique twist. It didn't need to be that good. Selleck made it that good!
  • Only the originals will do! Movie plot - Magnum, now a retired SEAL fourbagger and married to Maggie, is being trained by Higgins to be the next Robin Masters. Lily, now a Coast Guard Captain in charge of homeland defense in Honolulu, is abducted by the evil Buck Greene, now the Kingpin of Crime and Dastardly Deeds in Hawaii. Thomas and Jonathan go to rescue her and are captured themselves. Maggie contacts Rick, now Ice Pick, and T.C., now the wealthy CEO of a travel conglomerate complete with a cruise ship, an airline, the Royal Hawaiian Hotel (kudos to "Hawaiian Eye"), hydrofoil boats, and the Polynesian Cultural Center - sorry, BYU-Hawaii. VMO-2 is revived and using all the resources at their disposal they rescue Lily who then leads them to Buck and the captives. It a shoot out reminiscent of "Apocalypse Now" Buck is killed and Thomas and Jonathan are rescued.
After a thorough investigation by NCIS Agent Jethro Gibbs, Lily faces an Article 31 hearing and is represented by the legal team of Rabb & MacKenzie, now in civilian practice, and she is exonerated.
  • What next? Tim Curry as Higgins?
This looks like just as big a train wreck as the Miami Vice movie for anyone who grew up in the 80's.
  • There were few TV shows that can equal the quality of Magnum, P.I. The bulk of that quality I always felt came from the casting of the show. There are many comments here already stating that Tom Selleck is the only true Thomas Magnum and that the poster would boycott if any other actor was cast in the role. Equally important were the supporting actors. Can any fan honestly say that they would be happy with anyone but John Hillerman, Roger Mosely, and Larry Manetti as Higgins, T.C., and Rick? And without the original writers for the series would we see the same depth in the story and the characters?
Even if Hollyweird pulled its collective head out of its hind-end and did cast Selleck as Magnum it is inevitable that we'd see some horrible casting in the supporting roles or a script not worthy to serve as toilet paper. A young and sexy female Higgins as a love interest? Rick as a washed-up rapper who took one bullet too many and retired to run a club? I wish there were more than 8 seasons of Magnum P.I. but I don't think a movie is the way to bring Magnum back. Unless there's a fantastic script and the original cast reprising their roles, please, just leave us fans with our memories of a fantastic series. And let it stay just that; a series.
  • that arrogant Matthew Mconaghy already ruined a CLIVE CUSSLER movie by plahing Dirk Pitt. The movie was incredibly horrible partly because this guy was not at all Dirk Pitt from the books

bring back old Magnum, even though he is in his 60s now
  • i agree tom selleck is the only one to play the part....why not have a magnum/jag movie....Lily and Magnum walk off into the sunset...the NVA take Lily ...Magnum takes his SEAL Team to rescue her , Against orders..gets court martialed,And Harm and the Jag staff are to defend him...all the cool people from both shows....what a movie that would make....I would be first in line.......I hope they don't screw this up by putting MM in the part......
  • Tom Selleck as Magnum means something to a generation of fans. Hollywood should FINALLY do something right and BRING BACK the ORIGINAL cast and pick up years after the series ended. Or why bother? A new generation doesn't care about the name Magnum. Create a new PI for them and GIVE THE FANS WHAT THEY WANT!!! TOM SELLECK IS MAGNUM PI!!!
  • and another thing: we KNOW Selleck still has a great draw in the right role! Just look at the fantastic JESSE STONE films!
  • I agree whole heartedly... Tom Selleck is the only one to play Magnum. I LOVE the idea of a reunion show, bring back Higgins, Rick, T.C. and Lily. I heard in an interview that Tom Selleck WOULD consider a movie if the right script came along. I've read some good ideas on this web page!!!! Come on, WE WANT THE ORIGINAL MAGNUM BACK!!! Give the people what they want!
  • Hollywood has gone NUTS !!!

I was a kid when MAGNUM PI was on tv
I grew up watching that show.

I wrote Tom Selleck, he sent me an autographed picture
I have the shows dvd collection
There is only ONE magnun and that is TOM SELLECK
IT WOULDNT BE MAGNUM PI WITHOUT HIM !!!
OR JOHN HILLERMAN AS HIGGINS !!!!
THE SHOW IS A CLASSIC, I LOVE IT
IF YOUR GONNA MAKE A MOVIE, BRING BACK THE ORIGINAL CAST!!!
  • There is no other magnum, just Tom Selleck. He is the best!!!
  • Why can't anyone in hollywierd come up with an orginal idea anymore instead of ruining old movies and tv show memories.
  • McConaughey, Yeah right.
Remember the last episode - Magnum walking away Lily, by his wife, McConaughey couldn't hold a breath to what TS achieved with the look into the camera lens.
The story live should have something to do with a grown-up or in school/college, Lily being abducted by the chinese guy that shot Magnum, then was released to the foreign government for exchange of prisoners.
Lily is abducted to get Magnum out in the open of the after he returns to the mainland to teach, how to be a PI in Hawaii (or something along those lines)
Tom Sellick is the only Magnum PI
That's it - Close the book.
  • Just bring all of the guys back!! There were too many questions left when the show ended. Did Rick say yes, or what will Magnum do in the Navy, or what about his daughter? Too many questions left. Just bring them all back and finish the story!
