Who needs a Point Break remake when there are true surf stories to be told? More casting news trickled down the pipeline about the upcoming surf film Mavericks. Leven Rambin has signed on to play the female lead in the true story, joining previously cast Gerard Butler and Jonny Weston.

Named after a surfing location in Northern California, Mavericks is set to be directed by 8 Mile’s Curtis Hanson, and is based on the true story of big-wave surfer Jay Moriarty. Jonny Weston is already set up to play the starring role. Also previously cast is Gerard Butler, who’s on board to play Moriarty’s trainer Rick “Frosty” Hesson.

According to Variety, Leven Rambin, who will be playing the part of Glimmer in the big screen adaptation of The Hunger Games, has been cast to play Moriarty’s best friend and “the object of his adoration.” She’s described as a California surfer-girl, so it’s likely the actress will have to do a bit of surf training, if she’s not already familiar with the sport. Her previous credits include Scoundrel, Grey’s Anatomy and One Tree Hill. While it’s likely that The Hunger Games will help push her toward fame, Mavericks sounds like it could be a great film.

Moriarty’s story doesn’t have a happy ending, however from the sound of it, the man showed a lot of potential and determination as a surfer, seeking to tackle the huge waves of Mavericks, which during the winter months, can apparently reach the size of five-story buildings.
