Paramount needs to get moving and announce the full cast for Star Trek already. The rumors have gotten so ridiculous that now they’re repeating. The Sunday Mirror is claiming that James McAvoy, who played Mr. Tumnus in The Chronicles of Narnia has the part of Scotty. If you’ve been following along you probably remember that this rumor made the rounds and was dispelled by McAvoy himself way back in March.

McAvoy is certainly about the right age they’re probably looking for. He’s 28, which puts him right in that same age bracket with Zachary Quinto who has already been confirmed to be playing Spock. Back in March McAvoy said the idea of him playing Scotty was “Rubbish rubbish” but I suppose in the interim things could have changed.

The bad thing is that if he does have the part it probably means bad things for the character. When denying the rumors back in March, McAvoy was adamant that he would change the character so suit his own vision of what he should be. “I wouldn't play Scotty as written in the Original Series,” he told RottenTomatoes. Of course the mere fact that McAvoy is Scottish instantly makes things different, since James Doohan, who originally played the character was simply doing an outrageous fake accent. If McAvoy was interested in playing the character as the Scotty we know I’d say he’s perfect, but he’s an accomplished actor and it sounds like he’s more interested in making Scotty his own that giving us all the lovable Chief Engineer we all know.
