For the most part I’m thankful that during my own adolescence—full of awkwardness and geek outs best left forgotten—the internet was just a fledgling thing that didn’t yet offer me millions of opportunities to embarrass myself…because I would have. Hell, I do now - almost daily. But I was not nearly as cool as young Cara, who made the marvelous mashup above (tipped by GFR's Rudie Obias). The teen Youtuber humbly describes herself as “just your typical 14 year old” on her Channel's bio page. But, Cara, real talk: there is nothing typical about what you have created here. It’s all kinds of awesome.
Cara’s profile tells us she likes to sing. Clearly, she also likes the adored teen comedy Mean Girls as well as the Broadway musical Book of Mormon. But lucky for us, Cara also likes to write choral pieces inspired by her favorite movies and musicals. In the vid above, this incredible 14 year old sings nine parts while playing Cady Heron, Regina George, Gretchen Wieners, Karen Smith, Ms. Norbury, Damian, and Janis Ian from the much love teen comedy. On top of that, she blends Book of Mormon’s introduction song “Hello” with a barrage of Mean Girls quotes, centering the whole outrageous enterprise around the infamous Burn Book, in which Queen Bee Regina and her cohorts scrawl horrible rumors about everyone else at school.
In case you’re not familiar with the original song “Hello”, dare to compare Cara's version against the Broadway cast’s live performance at the 66th Tony Awards. Bonus for theater nerds, this vid includes a slew of cultured cameos:
Funny enough, this mash-up isn’t all that far-fetched as a Mean Girls musical could very well become a thing. Earlier this year when 30 Rock wrapped, Mean Girls screenwriter Tina Fey was pressed for what she had coming next, and she admitted a musical version of the adored frenemies comedy was something being considered. At the time, Fey revealed Paramount was on board for the idea along with her composer/producer husband Jeff Richmond. But with Fey setting up new television series at Fox and NBC, who knows when she’ll have time to write a musical. If it does happen, is it too soon to suggest Cara for the role of Cady?
