Megan Ellison Secures The Rights To The Terminator Franchise, Justin Lin Officially Directing image
There have been a lot of rumors lately about the future of the Terminator franchise, with Arnold Schwarzenegger very vocal about how much he wants to make another film and Fast Five director Justin Lin also interested in taking over the franchise that James Cameron started. But none of these rumors could come true until someone finally bought the franchise's rights from hedge fund Pacificor and committed to actually making a movie out of them; starting earlier this week Lionsgate Films and the production company Annapurna Films were duking it out to become the new home of the T-1000 and friends. We threw our support behind Annapurna Films and its head Megan Ellison, since she had also secured financing for new films from Kathryn Bigelow, Paul Tomas Anderson and John Hillcoat and seemed to know from quality filmmaking.

Now you can officially start hoping that Ellison's participation puts the Terminator series back on track. Deadline reports that she has won the bidding war, and also that Lin is now definitely attached to direct. There's no distributor in place but that should definitely change soon; it's possible they'll even start selling the rights while they're still at Cannes. With Schwarzenegger back in action the ball is moving remarkably fast on this, and i wouldn't be surprised to see production start before the end of the year, though that of course depends on a million other factors that have to fall into place. Will any of the possible plot rumors we've been hearing actually come to pass? The rumors about the original cast returning may well be up in the air now that Annapurna has the rights, but really, anything is possible. I'm dying to find out, but don't even know where to start speculating. Join me in the comments to kick things off.
