I was a big fan of the old ‘Get Smart’ television series when I was younger, and when even younger was an even bigger fan of the cartoon version of the show ‘Inspector Gadget’. Both feature the brilliance of Don Adams as a bumbling secret agent, the cartoon just took the Max Smart character and gave him even more cool gadgets.
For the movie version, my expectations have been low. Sure they’ve brought in the genius of Steve Carell to star in it, and the uber-hotness of Anne Hathaway to make out with him (lucky Steve), but so few of these television to movie adaptations have actually worked it’s hard not to be skeptical. Well here’s a new reason to have hope for the Get Smart movie. Mel Brooks is serving as a creative consultant on the film, and even wrote at least one scene for it, which according to AICN has already been filmed.
Now if you don’t know why it’s a big deal to have Mel Brooks involved with a comedy like Get Smart, then you either have no sense of humor or you’ve somehow managed to avoid seeing any of the following films: The Producers, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, History of the World: Part I, Spaceballs, Robin Hood: Men in Tights. Perhaps even more importantly, Brooks and his partner Buck Henry created the original ‘Get Smart’ television show. Henry has also been signed on as a creative consultant. Get Smart has their input and their blessing, which is more than most of the other television to movie adaptations we’ve had foisted on us have gotten from their creators.
Things are really looking up for Get Smart, and I never doubted it. Ok I did, but you can’t prove anything. Ok if you scroll up two paragraphs you can prove it but please don’t do that. I have my reputation to look out for.

Inspector Gadget was in no way, shape or form an animated version of Get Smart. Besides the voice of Don Adams, it had about as much in common with Get Smart as Tennessee Tuxedo. Smart, while a bumbler, was a competent agent who was usually responsible for the success of his missions. Gadget was incompetent and his cases were solved by his niece Penny and her dog. It is a subtle, but very important, difference, as it establishes the character's basic natures.
Wow, definitely good news. I didn't have hope in this movie before (still skeptical, really) but with Buck Henry and Mel Brooks involved, I have a lot more hope now.
