Always quick to shy away from controversy, word is that the Walt Disney Company may now be looking to free themselves from Mel Gibson's next movie Apocalypto, in light of his recent belly flop into bad press.
Fox News is reporting that the Mouse House is shopping the movie around to other potential distributors. No matter how much Mel might or might not hate Jews, it's unlikely they'll have trouble finding a home for it. Let's not forget how much Passion of the Christ made, and there are plenty of indie studios who don't bat an eye at media meltdowns like this. Lions Gate for instance, is already rumored to be interested.
If Disney does ditch Mel because of this, it'll be the second time they've dropped one of his movies. The first was The Passion, which they ditched and forced Mel to finance himself because of fears that audiences would stay away over the controversy the film would generate. It was one of the studio's biggest ever mistakes. Not only did The Passion go on to make more money than well... Jesus, but it was huge with Disney's primary target demo: family film loving Christians.
By getting rid of Apocalypto they could well be on the way to making yet another colossal blunder. They, along with just about everyone else, might be vastly overestimating how much Mel's devoted moviegoers care about his feelings on Judaism. That's not to say Passion of the Christ fans hate Jews, they probably just don't know any, and thus couldn't care less what Mel or anyone else thinks of them. Come on, let's face it. Mel's biggest fans are middle America and slow living southerners. Red state people. Sorry, there's just not a huge Jewish population in Mississippi. Most ticket buyers may not agree with his crazed, anti-Semitic ranting, but will they care enough to avoid his next movie? I think it's unlikely.
Apocalypto is currently in post-production and slated for a December 8, 2006 release. Expect that to slip a little bit.
