Michael Fassbender Confirmed As Magneto, Beast Cast In X-Men: First Class

After seeing him play some sort of weird, boxing leprechaun in Jonah Hex, the goodwill I felt for Michael Fassbender after Inglourious Basterds has taken a hit. But if he does right by this, he’ll win it all back. EW has confirmed that as rumored, Michael Fassbender will play a young Magneto in Fox’s X-Men: First Class.

James McAvoy is already on board the film to play a young Charles Xavier, and now he has a nemesis. Or maybe he has a friend? Xavier and Magneto actually started out as friends in colleagues in their early days, back when Magneto went by the name of Eric Lensherr. It’s unclear which Magneto we’ll see in the prequel: Friend or foe?

Also confirmed to be on board the film is unknown Benjamin Walker. Showbiz 411 says he’s been cast to play Hank McCoy, better known as Beast. In X-Men: The Last Stand Kelsey Grammer played the character, and did a good job of it, though it was hard to notice since so much of the film around him was generally awful.

Beast becomes the first of Professor Xavier’s students to be cast in the film. Now that the hairy, blue genius is handled the others are sure to follow at a rapid pace. Stick around, we’ll let you know as soon as they’re announced.
