As we predicted a few weeks ago when we fantasy cast Crispin Glover in the inevitable film’s lead role, Michael Jackson: The Movie is happening. Variety says Sony Pictures is close to a deal with AEG Entertainment, the owners of concert footage which would be used in making the movie.
And that’s actually where this whole thing becomes a little unclear. Apparently the movie will feature a lot of actual Michael Jackson footage, including over 80 hours of rehearsal video filmed by Jackson while preparing for the concert he was to perform in London and at least three classic MJ music videos (possibly even an alternate, 3D version of Thriller). That makes this sound like it’s some sort of documentary, but it’s being referred to as a “feature” and it’s High School Musical director Kenny Ortega who’s expected to helm it.
So what kind of movie will this be? What’s Sony up to? Right now it doesn’t make much sense. We’ll keep you updated as more details surface. Meanwhile, someone call up Crispin Glover and talk him into playing Michael.
