Who didn't call a record breaker box office return for Michael Jackson's This Is It? Most assumed audiences would storm theaters to see what is being sold as the most sincere, up close and personal view of Michael Jackson and his work ever to be put to tape. Add that to the fact that it's actually got some pretty good buzz going, with some even saying that it "returns Michael Jackson's humanity" and record breaking box office seems like a sure thing, right? Not so fast. It may be profitable but don't expect This is It to smash many significant records.
Checks have been cashed, dollars have been counted, and we're starting to get a good idea of exactly how successful This Is It will be. The results are somewhat surprising. According to Variety, the film took in $2.2 million dollars on its opening night Tuesday and then repeated that today, bringing its current total to $4.4 million. Most are predicting that the flick will easily top the $31 million that Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour, the concert movie with highest opening weekend gross, brought in.
Now, don't get me wrong, this movie is going to be ridiculously successful and will easily pay for itself (Sony bought the footage for $60 million), but with all the hype surrounding this beast, you'd think it'd be able to break more than a concert movie record. What do those things usually make? Like $650,000? With international tickets yet to be calculated, the worldwide total for This Is It will certainly skyrocket over the next few days, but with a domestic total like $4.4 million on an opening day that had MJ fans from all over the country attending, I'm left to wonder: is this it?
