I’m going to say up front that as rumors go, this one is a bit sketchy. But it’s an interesting notion, and in the interests of reporting everything we get our hands on unfiltered, here it is.
Tonight I got an email from a friend of the site who says she was lucky enough to spot Smallville star Michael Rosenbaum out and about lunching with Michael Bay in Hollywood this past weekend. Now they could be out having some sort of secret gay affair I suppose, or maybe they’re secret BFFs, but our source seems to think that they were talking business, and that their business may have been Michael Bay’s reboot of the classic horror movie Nightmare on Elm Street. And here’s where the speculation gets really unsubstantiated and crazy… our source guesses that this could mean Rosenbaum is up for the role of young Freddy Krueger, since Bay will need one to fill Robert Englund’s shoes.
However, Michael Bay has a lot of pokers in the fire and they could have really been talking about anything. Maybe he wants him to voice a robot in Transformers 2. But Rosenbaum is about the right age to put on the claws and play Freddy in a reboot, and for some weird reason it’s easy to picture him actually excelling at the role. He’d never be Robert Englund, but Rosenbaum actually might not be half bad.
Oddly enough, Rosenbaum has actually worked with the original Freddy Krueger, Robert Englund before. In 1998 they both appeared in Urban Legend.
For now it’s all wild conjecture, but Bay and Rosenbaum are definitely up to something, and I seriously doubt it has anything to do with Smallville or buying matching charm bracelets.

yeah, I agree that no one can portray that burn-victem goof diddler, like robert englund. He had all the right facial expressions of a psychopath, which is why he did a good wishmaster, as well. But if they were to replace him with anyone, I think this michael guy, should be the one, because he too, is good at playing a psychotic asshole, unlike billy bob thornton, who to me, only seems good at playing the asshole part, sans evil psycho
Yes i agree. as a huge freddy fan, i believe that only Robert Englund can and SHOULD play freddy. but i understand why he wouldn't want to go back to the beginning. New Line had great success with Freddy, and of course the really fun flick, Freddy vs Jason. if they want to do another FvsJ, that would be better....but to go back to a classic and replace a classic actor, would be a huge mistake. Anybody see hannibal rising? it was an ok movie in itself...but i missed anthony hopkins like crazy. well, i made my point. if they do another freddy movie, Robert Englund should play Freddy or the movie shouldn't be made!
Long Live Freddy!
That would be a great hit for Michael,
But as much as i love michael,
The movies just wouldn't be the same without Robert,
The original freddy was very scarey,
and michael, i can't see him pulling it off.
But hopefully he can prove me wrong but for now i have to stand by my opinion.
Good luck Michael.
I had read that Englund is actually the one who had said he does not want to start all over with the Nightmare movies. It is hard to imagine what the movie will be like without Englund since this is like the only horror movie where the same guy has played the killer in every movie. If I were Michael Bay I would pay Robert Englund whatever he demands to play this role. It will only make him more profit in the end
What!!???? This is..Pathetic. I still stand under the notion that robert englund IS Freddy Krueger, Noone else can play him. Let the classic be a "Classic" people.
No one but Robert Englund will ever be able to play the role of Freddy Krueger effectively. Robert Englund own this role and knows it inside and out. Replacing him would be the worst thing that Michael Bay could do for this movie as it will alienate pretty much all of the original series loyal fan base. Now, I can maybe see Michael Rosenbaum playing the part of only a young Freddy Krueger since Robert Englund is obviously too old, but once he's burned and killed, only Robert is fit to play the role. Please heed my warning Michael Bay...don't kill this movie by replacing Robert Englund.
