Mikael Hafstrom Directing A Modern-Day Jekyl And Hyde Thriller Titled Wake![]()
There have been countless Jekyll and Hyde film projects over the years, though it has been years since a studio has mounted a legitimate telling of the timeless identity-crisis tale. And no, the 2001 endeavor Jekyl and Hyde: The Musical with David Hasselhoff doesn’t count.
But the good folks at Hammer Films reportedly are set to produce and finance a modern-day retelling of the Jekyl and Hyde myth with Swedish director Mikael Hafstrom at the helm, as reported by Deadline. The thriller will be called Wake, though little else about the project is known at this point. Deadline says the screenwriters for the Hyde project will be Christopher Borrelli and Matt Sand. The former penned The Vatican Tapes, which ScriptShadow says is another exorcism drama, while the latter worked on Deepwater Horizon, a film centered around the oil-rig disaster that occurred in the Gulf of Mexico. As for Hafstrom, he also helmed an exorcism thriller -- The Rite with Anthony Hopkins -- as well as the eerie Stephen King adaptation of 1408 with John Cusack playing a magazine columnist haunted by the ghosts in a New York hotel room. That film had more suspense than expected, and I hope Hafstrom leans in that direction with his Hyde film than the shock-and-bore techniques he employed in Rite. So much of the film’s success will rely on casting, so we’ll reserve our judgment until Hafstrom’s able to cast his Dr. Jekyl. Please don’t let it be Hopkins. |
