Milla Jovovich Promises Resident Evil 5 Is Happening With Input From Fans![]()
Resident Evil: Afterlife is officially the biggest opener in the Resident Evil franchise and that, of course, means they’re more than eager to get going on another one. After the box office receipts tallied up it’s $27 million opening (and that’s domestically alone) Milla Jovovich went to NY Mag and told them “So we’re definitely going to make another one.”
They’re making more Resident Evil movies but it sounds like they don’t really want to go through all the trouble to have to come up with ideas for them and stuff. So they’re hoping that you, the fans, will do all the work for them. Milla explains, “We’ve been talking to a lot of fans on Twitter and stuff, so it’s probably going to be one of the first movies where we really talk to fans to see what they want, and what characters they want to see. It's going to be a more interactive process.” Normally this is a really bad idea. The thing is, fans think they know what they want, but usually when they get it, it just never turns out the way they’d hoped or it’s never really what you want it to be. The best way to make a movie is to get really brilliantly creative people, lock them in a room, and let them be creative. Normally. But this is Resident Evil and even as someone who has sort of enjoyed watching most of these movies I’m willing to admit that the stories are kind of irrelevant. With the exception of the first movie the scripts have been almost universally terrible. Afterlife was probably the worst of the bunch. It’s fun to watch, a visual feast, but the story was pretty much a disaster. There’s really nowhere to go but up here. Whatever the fans come up with can’t possibly be worse than what Paul W.S. Anderson has come up with and even if it is, well it doesn’t really seem to matter as long as they get the 3D right and as long as Milla gets to run around a lot and shoot stuff. That’s all anyone wants from this franchise. I do wonder when exactly this fifth movie will get made, though. Ali Larter is, at the moment, very pregnant and you have to think it’ll be some time before she’ll be in fighting shape for another movie. I suppose they could make the fifth RE without her character, Claire Redfield, but at this point the movie franchise (even though the game franchise does) cannot live without Milla Jovovich as Alice. And Milla has spent a lot of time recently telling just about any tabloid reporter who will listen that she’s baby crazy and planning to get pregnant as soon as possible. If that happens, you’re looking at a two or three year window before another Resident Evil can even be considered. By then Milla Jovovich will be 37. How much longer can she keep pulling these physically demanding stunts off? The clock is ticking and the window is closing. |
