Abigail Breslin and Georgie Henley of the Chronicles of Narnia franchise are so adorable. Why would anybody want to torture and psychologically abuse them? We’re going to have to ask Mira Sorvino, who has been cast in Stan Brooks’ The Class Project as the wicked mother who makes life a living hell for these sisters.

Brooks’ film, penned by Fab Filippo and Adam Till, is a ripped-from-the-headlines true crime thriller about young girls who grow tired of their alcoholic mother’s abusive ways. All of their lives they’ve suffered at the hands of their parent and her endless streak of horrible boyfriends. But the girls, played by Breslin and Henley, reach a breaking point and reportedly plot to knock off their mom and live off the life insurance payout.

Variety reports that Class Project takes its cues from "The Class Project: How To Kill a Mother: The True Story of Canada's Infamous Bathtub Girls," which was penned by Toronto Star reporter Bob Mitchell back in 2008. It calls to mind a recent story on Oprah Winfrey’s now-defunct talk show of a teenage boy who spent his formative years locked in a closet, where he was tortured by his mother and assorted step-dads. These dramas rip right to the heart of any parent watching, and I’m sure Class Project will have a similar effect.

Brooks made a wise decision casting accomplished actors Breslin and Henley in the roles of the sisters. They sound like complicated parts to pull off, but these gifted young performers should be up to the task. As for Sorvino, an Oscar winner in her own right, she comes to Project after wrapping a part in a similar true-crime thriller – the sex slave drama Trade of Innocents -- so she appears to be finding creative inspirations in the problems plaguing our society. Let’s see if she can transform that passion into a commanding performance.
