All of the talk about a new Ghostbusters movie has been pretty clear: the original cast is going to return, even the notoriously difficult Bill Murray. Somehow I’ve only associated that with the actual Ghostbuster characters from the original - Ackroyd, Murray, Ramis, and Hudson. Ackroyd says those aren’t the only planned returns, however, and that they are hoping for a return for some of the other characters as well, including Sigourney Weaver.
Weaver, of course, played Dana Barrett, the primary client for the ‘busters and love interest for Murray’s Dr. Venkmen, in the first two pictures. According to MTV Movies Blog, Weaver has been hesitant to sign on for the sequel, but Ackroyd is hopeful that she will join the project before it starts filming. This news excites me, but not because of Weaver. If they can get her to return, is there a chance we’ll see Annie Potts back as the secretary with an attitude, Jeanine? How about a return of Louis Tully, from the elusive Rick Moranis? The possibilities are exciting. As for the movie, Ackroyd reinforced the idea that the old Ghostbuster characters would be serving in a mentor role, although this time he mentions that there will be lots of “cadets” learning to use the new equipment. Might a third Ghostbusters movie be a mix between the old ghost catching comedy and some sort of Ghostbusters academy style humor? That might be a fresh enough approach to really sell the third picture to old and new audiences. Both Ramis and Ackroyd have repeatedly said they expect filming to start later this year. Hopefully we’ll get more details as the movie enters actual production.
