More Dragon Wars For 2009

Korean films have certainly made a splash in the American film market in recent years. Between Chan-wook Park’s Vengeance trilogy and this year’s Dragon Wars, the country has been exporting some highly anticipated films. Well, here’s another one to be excited about: a sequel for Dragon Wars.

The fine fellows over at JoBlo have uncovered an interview with director Shim Hyung-rae where the director reveals that talks are going on for a sequel, and it might be coming sooner than expected. If everything goes according to plan, Dragon Wars 2 could hit American screens in 2009.

The news comes as a bit of a shock because regardless of the hype and interest around the film, Dragon Wars hasn’t had the most impressive run in America. The movie hasn’t topped $10 million in its two week run, a far cry from its performance overseas, where the movie has grossed over $55 million.

I’m a little surprised that the 2009 release date is being tossed around, but not very shocked at all to hear there is talk of a sequel. After all, presumably there’s a strike coming and Hollywood studios need to stockpile movies to keep alive during the potential draught. This seems like the perfect movie to store until needed, and then hope it outperforms the original by a sizable amount.
