More Human Casting On Transformers

By Josh Tyler: 2006-04-21 00:00:00
More Human Casting On Transformers The Transformers live action movie is really getting rolling now. Casting rumors on the movie have been floating around for weeks, but now we have a big list of just exactly who might be playing the human characters in the movie from IGN.

In the list are quite a few Michael Bay regulars, which makes you wonder if perhaps he’ll end up directing it after all, instead of just taking a producer role. For instance Michael Clarke Duncan is supposed to be in talks to take on the role of a Chief Warrant officer in the army named Figeuroa. Jon Voight may play U.S. Secretary of state Keller. Josh Duhamel is in talks to play a young military commander named Lennox. Bernie Mac is the leading candidate to play a guy named “Bobby Bolivia”. Also up for parts are Tyrese as “Epps”, John Turturro as “Simmons”, Rachael Taylor as “Maggie”, Trent Van Winkle as “Trent”, John Robinson as “Miles”, and Megan Fox as “Mikaela”. Those who have been paying attention may have noticed that the names of Shia Labeouf and Ethan Phillips are missing. A few weeks ago we heard that Shia had been cast as “Sam” and since I don’t see anyone else’s name listed next to his character there’s a good chance he’s still on board. Whether Phillips is still in or not is anyone’s guess.

The good news is that there are quite a few solid actors in there. Michael Clarke Duncan is a great addition, I’ve got a soft spot for Bernie Mac and Tyrese, and John Turturro is a great performer. The bad news is that there are an awful lot of characters in that list, and it sounds like the cast list for a more human driven disaster movie. This sounds like the size of cast I’d expect for Day After Tomorrow 2, not Transformers, a movie which if they’re doing it right should have as few human characters as possible and be focused entirely on the film’s giant freakin robot characters.

Frankly I’m a little worried. Hollywood has a tendency to screw movies like this up, and the budget saving route to go with a Transformers movie is to make a film focused on human characters and to minimize the actual screen time of the Transformers themselves as much as possible. It’s also the WRONG way to go about making a Transformers movie, and anything less than a film filled with 75% Transformer action will be a massive disappointment. I’m not interested in seeing The Core with robots in it. We don’t Transformers: Independence Day That is NOT what this movie should be. Hopefully, that isn’t what they’re going for and maybe a lot of the names on this casting list are really little more than cameos.

Move over Michael Clarke Duncan and make plenty of room for Megatron.
