Musician Joanna Newsom Joins Paul Thomas Anderson's Inherent Vice
Itís been a full two months since we ran a story about casting for Paul Thomas Andersonís upcoming Inherent Vice, and you canít blame us for thinking that meant that the casting process was complete - especially since the film has been shooting since May. But according to The Playlist, singer-songwriter Joanna Newsom has been added to the already stacked cast. This makes her the second musician to join the film, joining hip-hop artist Joaquin Phoenix. Wait, you mean Iím Still Here wasnít real?
Unfortunately, thereís no word on who Newsom will be playing within the film, but considering itís a shaggy dog detective story, there are plenty of ways for a singer to enter the picture. Hopefully, sheíll actually be performing some of her music on screen, perhaps in a smoky dimly-lit bar. Sheís both an accomplished pianist and a harpist, and while having her play the piano would make more sense in most films, I have a feeling Anderson would revel in having a giant harp in his movie. Maybe with oil gushing out of it.
With three highly acclaimed albums behind her, Newsom, who is married to SNL vet Andy Samberg, is well accomplished on the musical front, but has only shined as an actress on one occasion... and she was playing herself. It was for an episode of IFCís Portlandia, in which Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein try and fit her harp into a hatchback. Interestingly enough, Armisen plays a character named Joaquin. Fate? Perhaps. Check that clip out below.
Now, back to your regularly scheduled Inherent Vice article. The film, based on a novel from Thomas Pynchon, follows pot-smoking L.A. private detective Doc Sportello (Phoenix), who is investigating the kidnapping of one of his ex-girlfriends. As you might expect, the actual cops arenít too keen on Sportello butting into their business, but that doesnít stop him from winding his way through a world of weirdoes in order to get the case solved.
Ready for that cast list? Besides those previously mentioned, the filmís stars include Benicio Del Toro, Reese Witherspoon, Josh Brolin, Owen Wilson, Martin Short, Jena Malone, Maya Rudolph, Katherine Waterson, Kevin OíConnor, Timothy Simons, Peter McRobbie, and Sasha Pieterse.
Unlike most other highly anticipated films coming out in the next year, Inherent Vice hasnít yet locked down an opening weekend.
Check out Newsomís lovely live performance of her song ďGo LongĒ below.
