My Chemical Romance On Watchmen Soundtrack

By Katey Rich: 2008-07-29 19:36:46
My Chemical Romance On Watchmen Soundtrack After Zack Snyder came to Comic Con and gave fans even more reason to be excited about his take on Watchmen, the buzz has built up to the point that even the soundtrack is news at this point. MTV Movies broke the story that Zack Snyder will be breaking his ban on pre-1985 music—kinda—by teaming up with My Chemical Romance to record a song for the soundtrack.

You may remember that during Comic Con, Snyder said The Smashing Pumpkins song heard in the Watchmen trailer, “The Beginning is the End is the Beginning,” would not be used in the movie because it was recorded after 1985, when the movie is set. And Snyder is sticking to that rule, using period-appropriate music to tell the story that spans several decades. But since My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way is a huge Watchmen fan, and contacted Snyder about participating in the soundtrack, the director made an exception. “We’re trying to work with them right now to put together possibly a song for the end titles.[They’ll perform] like a cover of “Desolation Row,” or something like that.”

“Desolation Row,” a Bob Dylan song from the Highway 61 Revisited album, is not only period-appropriate for pretty much any of the events in Watchmen, but, as the title might suggest, pretty fitting with the world the movie portrays. Just look at this lyric: “Now at midnight all the agents/And the superhuman crew/Come out and round up everyone/That knows more than they do.” Sounds pretty fitting for a cynical take on superheroes. (Edit: As pointed out by reader Dan, those lyrics are actually cited in the graphic novel. Guess it's about time I read the book, huh? Click here for the rest of the equally dark lyrics.)

Regardless of what My Chemical Romance chooses to cover, or how the song turns out, it’s exciting that Snyder is taking his job so seriously even when it comes to the soundtrack. For the moment he’s the director all the geeks can agree on, and now the music geeks can be happy too.

  • My Chemical Romance is by far the most amazingly amazing awsome band ever. and if you disagree, Mikey will throw a toaster in your tub while you are bathing. choose carefully, now.... or Mikey just might grab his toaster... and dont think Frankie wont help, he will. and Gerard will let them. but Ray, being the tall afro'd guy he is, will try and stop them. but then again, Bob will put a mirror in front of Ray and he will use his Bobness on him. so therefore, Mikey will get you.
and remember my parting message: love My Chemical Romance, or have death by toaster. our advantage, of course.

    (and Im not kidding, either.)

    go MCR!!!!!
  • It's a no brainer that MCR are the prostitutes of the dying corporate music industry and the weight and importance of their "music" won't trascend this retarded generation.
They're in the movie as a commercial not an aesthetical strategy, as always is in marketing.
  • IeromyHero, thank you.
    :D
  • Ha! Sean and Austin...you seriously need to get your ears cleaned out. I am not sure what crap you listen to..but MCR is very talented and a great band.
You would not know REAL music if Frank bashed you over the head with his guitar.
You are not only insulting a great band, but Zack Snyder as well. Have some respect.

MCR being on this soundtrack makes it complete.

    Thanks Mr. Snyder.
  • I'm actually excited about this. I think that's an interesting approach to keeping the music pre-1985.
  • Why God? Why? Now I understand why Allan Moore hates it when they turn his comics into movies.

To anyone who thinks MCR is good. Please learn a little about musical theory and complexity.
  • OH MY!

MCR covering Desolation Row!!! This is the worst news I've heard in a long time. If they want to cover him, whatever. But to use their version in this movie is quite sinister. I was really pulling for this movie until I heard this little bit. In my opinion Desolation Row is the most important song in the Watchmen series. The entire novel takes on the mood of the song sang by DYLAN. not some money-punk grunge version. I hope Allen Moore puts some freaky curse on Zach for this one.
  • My vote is for a cover of "All Along the Watchtower", whose lyrics were also featured at the end of a pivotal chapter in the original Watchmen series ("Outside in the distance a wild cat did growl - two riders were approaching, and the wind began to howl.") ...although the Jimi Hendrix version is more commonly known, Dylan penned the tune.

    Just my two cents.
  • Thanks, Dan! I added that to the story.
  • "Now at midnight all the agents/And the superhuman crew/Come out and round up everyone/That knows more than they do."

That's actually a quote used in the first chapter of the graphic novel. The title of the chapter is also "At Midnight, All The Agents."
