Usually cramming too many characters into a superhero movie is a sure way to kill it. But then most of the time when that happens it's because the original, good director who started whatever superhero incarnation you're discussing has been departed and replaced by some much less talented hack.

With Spider-Man 3, for the first time in superhero movie history the guy who started the franchise is sticking around. That hasn't stopped him from cramming more new characters in his movie than you can shake a stick at. Can Raimi make it work? Because it's starting to become a question of which Spider-Man villain isn't in the third movie rather than a question of which one is.

We already know that Goblin will make a return for the third movie, only this time his glider will be flown by his son. Venom is going to be one of the main bad guys, Topher Grace is being set up as a sort of Yin to Spider-Man's Yang. Sandman will figure into the picture somewhere, maybe as Spidey's main nemesis or as a side character. But wait, there's one more.

Raimi's apparently not finished there. Rumor-mongering blog Film Ick claims to have the inside track and says Raimi is also working illusion obsessed, fishbowl head villain Mysterio into the flick. What's more, they think he'll be played by Bruce Campbell.

This isn't a new rumor actually, it's been circulating since the early days of the movie's production. The only new thing here is that this particular site claims to have a confirmation on the character. Of course blogs claim a lot of things, and it's generally a safe bet to simply assume nothing any blog says is ever true. So take this for what it's worth.

If Mysterio is in the movie, I wouldn't expect more than cameo, especially if he's played by Campbell. Cameos are all Campbell has gotten in Raimi's Spidey movies and there's no reason to believe that'll change any time soon. It'll probably just be a walk on, maybe not even in costume, but rather as Mysterio's more boring alter ego of Quentin Beck. Film Ick says he'll appear in a skit, where Peter Parker finds out about a Spider-Man movie being made and goes to check it out. Beck is there on the set, since the Mysterio character is a special effects artist.
