Naomi Watts Cast As Princess Diana For Royal Drama Caught In Flight
Slowly but surely, Hollywood is working its way through the various stories of British royalty. Maybe it was the awards success of Tom Hooper’s The King’s Speech, but this year we have endured Madonna’s take on the love affair between King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson, and a Meryl Streep-led vehicle centered around Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
The fascination continues into 2012, where producers continue to mount Caught In Flight, a romantic drama documenting the late Princess Diana’s relationship with Dr. Hasnat Kahn. Though Jessica Chastain once had been considered for the coveted royal role, The Hollywood Reporter now says that Naomi Watts will play Diana in the feature, set to be directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel.
If you aren’t going to go with Chastain, Watts is a solid alternative, though whomever assumes the role of Diana will be under intense scrutiny to honor her memory and capture to legend on screen. The trade says Flight will focus on the last two years in Diana’s life, as she struggled to find personal happiness and poured her soul into international charity work. The production will begin later this year in the U.K., with screenwriter Stephen Jeffreys handling scripting duties.
This isn’t the only Diana story in the Hollywood pipeline. Just yesterday we reported that Charlize Theron and Carey Mulligan were being considered for a Diana film that would adapt David Wharfe's 2007 book Diana: Closely Guarded Secret. Having multiple Diana projects heading to theaters could take some of the tension off the filmmakers … or it could create a heated race to get into theaters first (much like we saw with the dueling Snow White features. Either way, we’re going to learn a lot more about Princess Diana in the months to come, so plug some Candle In the Wind into your iPod and brace yourself for the ride.
