English majors and former English majors, along with drama club chicks should start getting slightly excited. Although the definitive movie version of Wuthering Heights was released almost 70 years ago, it hasn’t stopped a new adaptation from being released on film or television every decade or so. Now, a well known actress who can fake a British accent will bring the doomed tale of Heathcliff and Catherine to movie screens once again.
Natalie Portman is on board for an Ecosse Films production of Emily Bronte’s novel, according to Variety. Ecosse is the company behind other costume dramas like Becoming Jane and Mrs. Brown. Portman will play Catherine, but a Heathcliff has not been chosen. The script was written by Girl with a Pearl Earring’s Olivia Hetreed.
The last time they tried to bring a big screen Wurthering Heights was in 1989 and despite the presence of Ralphs Fiennes and Juliette Binoche, the move grossed less than $750,000. I guess there's a built in audience for this type of movie, the sort of people who obsessively watched that Jane Austen series they had on PBS recently, but I can’t see getting excited about it. If Olivier has been there first, it’s not like you are going to be on top.
