National Treasure 3 Goes To Atlantis

By Josh Tyler: 2008-02-07 16:38:26
National Treasure 3 Goes To Atlantis With the money the second one made, there’s little doubt that Disney is planning a National Treasure 3. The question is where else can they take it? How many times can Ben Gate’s family be coincidentally involved in the pivotal events of history before the whole thing gets a bit ridiculous?

That problem may be solved in the third movie by ditching the “national” part of National Treasure and taking the gang outside the country to hunt for other lost treasures. That’s already been hinted at by Nic Cage, who several months ago said he wanted the next movie to be more international. Now the guys over at Jim Hill claim to have the scoop on what exactly Gates will be hunting next. Their guess? Atlantis.

They claim there’s already a brief plot synopsis for the sequel floating around at Disney. In it the Gates family goes to Easter Island to hunt for Atlantis and the perfect, clean, power source which was supposed to have powered the legendary sunken city. Their goal is to use it to end global warming, which would mean Disney could preach to us about reducing our carbon emissions while at the same time throwing Nic Cage off a cliff.

To me, the whole fun of National Treasure has always been the way it explores American history and makes it come alive. If that’s what they’re doing, then they’re totally abandoning that. Not only are they ditching the notion of looking for lost American treasures, they’re tossing history overboard as well in favor of hunting down fairytales, myths, and fantasy. A more logical move would be to send them after the Fountain of Youth. It’s still Fantasy but at least it keeps them involved in America and American history. I’d love to see Ben Gates on the trail of Ponce de Leon. But as we told you in our exclusive scoop back in June of last year, that’s probably the subject of the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie. As the Jim Hill guys point out, Disney probably won’t want to double up on the search for eternal life. Maybe they should switch them. Jack Sparrow and his wacky, over-CGI’d fantasy world is a much better fit with the lost city of Atlantis.

  • I cant wait to see the thrid instalment of these movies i think it would be great to do the movie on finding the lost city of atlantis, that or i think they should do movie on the presidents book, i dont know about anyone else, but the second movie had me wondering on what the hell was page 47 in the book about. But either way they go im sure the movie will be awsome
  • FIRST of all, yes, the topis picked out for these movies were of masonry background and obviously other backgrounds as well but someone just pointed this out as mainly that, not true and also that same person is wrong for saying that the topic of Atlantis has nothing to do with it (masonry)...I don't know where you get that notion from but get your facts straight! There is a DEFINITELY a connection :) SECOND...everyone who is in disagreement of having the next NATIONAL TREASURE being outside of the US (obviously meaning discovering a treasure outside US soil) would have to ask themselves "WHY?" over and over until they realize that "National Treasure" does not have stamped on it's title THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, so just because the last two were based on that particular nation does not mean that National Treasure only pertains to America! Sorry to sound like a dictionary for a moment but National is defined as relating to or belonging to a nation or country...the definition is not aiming at one specific nation or country so everyone needs to stop saying the movies won't make sense anymore...because IT WILL.

I personally find this worthy of the third movie topic only because we start off having goals, ambitions, and DREAMS, if it weren't for us dreaming our way of life we wouldn't have most or all of what we have today...men thought it unreal and fantasy-like to even imagine such a thing as flying right?..and what happened?? We could freaking fly (planes, etc.) lol You see what I mean people? Just because the film/writers/studio want to take the plot to higher and more exciting levels doesn't mean it's not worth the appreciation. Seriously, take all of this into consideration because the way I see it we're all connected, every country's history is interlocked with another's and so on and so on, THAT'S THE BEAUTY OF IT and to have movies like this capture it in a way that gives us a thirst for knowledge we should damn well respect it, at least the message it is sending out. Man o man are people quick to judge o_O
  • i understand you completely, it would be abandoning the national part of national treasure to search for atlantas. but, i can't see them searching for the fountain of youth either, or switching with Pirates of the Caribbean. There are other treasures i think they could search for, like dead man's cave (if you don't know what the treasure is it's a cave that 3 men gound filled with gold and they couldn't find it again) or they could make up a treasure....

i think it's a cool idea for another movie though, but i hope they stop after that.
  • It's a bit weird if Ben goes to explore the Bermuda Triangle, don't you think? Ben has studied the American history, so why would he explore the Bermuda Triangle. Unless there is a connection between the Bermuda Triangle and the American history, it is a bit unlikely if the third movie is about the Bermuda Triangle. Though, you can say the same about Atlantis.
The Book of Secrets is a book in which all the presidents of the United States, since president ... (?), write THEIR NATIONS biggest secrets.
A quote from Nicolas Cage in an interview:
“I believe that it should become more and more International Treasure,” he said. “I was very happy to see that we went to London, England and Paris, France, but I’d like to see the movie go wider still. I’d like to go into Africa, Egypt, Asia, and keep going. My hope is that Ben is recruited and he gets a dossier from these other countries about their history, and has to download it and learn it, and then try to go on these hunts on their behalf. That would be a lot of fun for me.”
  • IMO The Fountain of Youth is "Life Altering", sais by Gates to the Pres reguarding pg47 and is a National myth. However it is a little Lara Croft-ish for a USA History based legdends. As long as the plot follows USA history any # of plots can be followed. If they go after Atlantis again , IMO, that plot will fall away from the NT movies.

IDea: Gates goes to explore the Bermuda Triangle ,the party gets sucked under into the ocean only to be surounded by a power shield as their boat sinks to the bottom of the sea. THen when the boat hit hard ground the huge paved stones open and they enter Atlanis. Where they find "clean energy" being powered by the ducthmans mines gems, and of course the mines are inhabited by the missing colonists of Roe-in-noke(sp) who have been kept young by the deep inner earth stream which feeds The Fountain of youth! ......................... ;)
  • Like what other people said it takes way to long to act the movie so why don't you jst write it as a novel book and so people can read it and wait for the movie to come out...later... ;D
  • I like the idea of The Lost City of Atlantis, but I believe that it is located closer to home here in the US than what people think. Like in the Gulf of Mexico, but who am I to say where it is. But if it was there it could be a National Treasure, real or not real, I do believe it, but it has a different name than Atlantis. I know it is questionable, but by reading the discriptions of Atlantis, and look at a certain map, it all becomes clear.
  • is this a sequel to "National" Treasure. Atlantis was an idea by Plato. It could be anywhere. is it in the US? I don't think so. The fountain of youth in Florida, the Lost Dutchman's Mine in Arizona and other legends in the us and what is still with the theme of the free masons. I don't think it's Atlantis, but I could be wrong. Hollywood sometimes has a way of twisting ideas to sell theatre seats and DVDs.
  • umm the way i figured out it was atlantis was because in national treasure book of secrets agent suduski hints it.

during the part at the agency the guy walks up to suduski and says "our friend ben gates is in the news paper again."
suduski says "What did he do now find atlantis?"

that is how i know not somthing a few months back in the other movie. because in the first movie couldn't have hinted what the third movie was going to be about.

in fact the only reason the even made a second movie was because people liked the first so much and there were a crap ton of copies sold.

so assuming that the hint was from the first movie is and always will be compleatly retarted.

so the rest of you are idiots
  • Whoever mentioned masons has a very valid point, and that actually fits quite nicely with the "page 47." I have a professor who is a mason historian, and he says that 47 is very very heavily connected with free masonry, and free mason teachings. And as for it going international, or having to do with a power source or something.....it sounds far fetched...the movie is about AMERICAN HISTORY, and it's a TREASURE HUNT, not a search to save the world. Honestly, considering the last two movies, and and what i know about free masonry (and free masonry conspiracy theories). I'm putting my money on the movie being based around the masons, and one of the MANY treasure/conspiracy/power theories that have been worked up over the years.
  • Maybe they find Atlantis in the Bermuda Triangle?

As for it being on pg. 47 and that meaning there is stuff that occurred before and after, that means little. The second one talks about history before the country and before a president. The President's book just detailed what the president's learned and when.

I think even if the treasure happens to be out of the US it will touch on US history at least a little bit.

Either way I don't think it will be about JFK or Area 51, because they mentioned them in the movie while they were looking through the book.
  • What people need to know that America's historical background revolves around other countries especially France and Britain since they helped create this "Nation". So you can somewhat pull off international scenes and plots. In addition, either way they choose to go with, if its Atlantis or The fountain of Youth, they can still incorporate some way how either one of the titles how America is a part of that title weather its Atlantis or the Fountain of Youth
  • I think instead of going after fairytales they should keep with the whole american history......maybe something delving deeper into the knights templar and the mason or even something about a old plot for britian to take over america.. as it was kinda hinted in the second movie... maybe even masons being the one to foil a plot to take over america by the british....something like that would be cooler thatn following false gimicks..that would probably ruin the whole series for me
  • I'm sooo exited about the coming out of National Treasure 3! The first and second movie was awsome. Thought i did prefer the first one better. I kno the next one's gonna be a huge success too!
  • I love the National Treasure movies and I agree that they should continue the series, it really makes you think. But going international? What about the Lost Dutchman's mine, it could add to the National treasure. Area 51 could be a plot for a future movie but that would be to obvious for number 3. There are plenty of ideas for the future of urben myths and legends story.
  • Uh-huh...

"To me, the whole fun of National Treasure has always been the way it explores American history and makes it come alive. If that’s what they’re doing, then they’re totally abandoning that."

Yeah, because the treasure of the Knight's Templar, an order which was forcefully disbanded in 1309 and was based in Europe and the Holy Land and involved deeply in the crusades, was a piece of American history. Sure, it randomly goes around lots of dead presidents. But it wasn't exactly a piece of American treasure, was it? If they can have the Knight's Templar treasure based around American history, they can do it with Atlantis too.
  • May I point something out? You can get a feel for what part of history we are talking about. Page 47 has to have occurred after some things, and before others. The pages are in a chronological sequence. Roanoke occurred before there was a president, or a presidents book of secrets. Why not the lost dutchmans gold? It would be a large treasure, you could do 1800's western U.S. history, and it could be a good lead in to another treasure. Maybe they wouldn't be following the Gates family. Maybe it's the computer guys turn (the one driving the Ferrari)? Given the fact they were in the Dakotas it wouldn't be out of the way to have done a little research before going to the Lost City of Gold. Then we will have seen the East Coast, Middle America, and the West Coast. I also like the idea of looking for the fountain of youth, and crossing over Carribean with National Treasure. Pixar crosses over their films all the time. Why shouldn't Disney? We'd get to see some of whatever happens from the National Treasure point of view, and the other half from Carribean. It would make for a VERY exciting tie in. At least, all that is just my opinion.
  • National Treasure 3 - Search for Area 51 treasure - technology, scientific knowledge, alien buddies... The possibilities are endless.
  • I honestly don't know if what N.C. says about the third plot being about Atlantis is true or not. Do you have any viable sources such as IMDb or Rotten Tomatoes that show some proof of that? How would we even KNOW if it's even ABOUT Atlantis? I think that unless there is some information we can look up, we won't know anything until a preview of the movie arrives.
  • I really don't think that all the movies should revolve around just American history. I like the idea of taking the movie international. The second one did venture to other places besides America. I think the reason people like the American ones is because the US has such great, exciting things in their history, and lots of legends and myths that could potentially be hunted down and thats what the movie does.
  • I think the movies are gr8, wherver they go iam sure it will be fun, just wish theyd get on with it......
  • I looove the idea of having the third installment of the films be about Ronoake. It is such an interesting part of American history. Although, I don't know that it would really be a part of the page 47 aspect because George Washington wasn't president until years later, but I'm sure they can work in out...I mean, look what they already came up with. Ronoake would be great. It never even crossed my mind.
  • idiots!! it's a national treasure, it should be us history plain and simple!
  • I totally agree with Paige. As a massive National treasure 1 and 2 fan myself i feel that the 3rd one must concentrate on what was on page 47 they have to. I cant believe that disney would ruin the 1st two films by going off the "NATIONAL" theme by looking for Atlantis. I agree that it could possibly work but not for the 3rd film.
  • NO WAY!!!!!!!!!! NO HOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you made National Treasure 3 about Atlantis, then National Treaure 2 would've been POINTLESS!!!!!!!!!!!!! The movie should be - National Treasure 3: Page 47, because the movie ends by the president asking Ben what was on page 47. The 3rd should begin with Ben and the president at the Library of Congress looking at page 47, when as they are looking, they see something that leads to another mystery. I am not saying that the Atlantis is not a good idea, acctully I think it is a GREAT IDEA!!!!!!!!!!! But not for the the 3rd movie. I totally think that if you were to make a 4th, that it should be National Treasure: The Lost City of Atlantis or National Treasure: The Sunken City of Atlantis!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BUT NOT THE 3RD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE listen to me, you would be making so much more if you would stick with Nation Treasure 3: Page 47!!!!!!!!!!!
