Even though no one particularly liked it, the second National Treasure movie made a ridiculous amount of money. More than the first one, which most seemed to dig. That of course means there will be a third one on the way, and today in an online press conference promoting the DVD release of National Treasure: Book of Secrets director Jon Turteltaub laid out a time table for the arrival of National Treasure 3.
Speaking of the next installment he says, “I'm guessing that we're a few years away. By the time we come up with a decent idea and develop it into a complicated and intelligent puzzle it's going to be at least 2009. Then to prep it and cast it... it should be three years away.” That’d put it in 2011. Three years was about the time lapse between the first and second films as well, with the first one coming out in 2004 and the second in 2007.
Turteltaub though doesn’t feel that the National Treasure sequels are driven by money. He thinks I’m a cynical bastard. He’s probably right. Jon justifies the franchise this way: “This movie begets sequels because it's the kind of genre MEANT to beget sequels.”
Turteltaub didn’t confirm whether he’d actually be directing the third movie, but he does sound open to it. In the meantime though, it sounds like he’s also ready to get away from lurking around national monuments and try something different. Ready is actually kind of an understatement. When asked if he’d like to do something else, Turtletaub said, “YES!! Please let me make something else! PLEASE!!!!” I agree. The world needs more 3 Ninjas movies.

Here are some things I found interesting watching National Treasure 2 in slow motion.
Go to scene when book is found in Library of Congress
When Ben uses his phone and snaps a picture of page 47, look at the top of his cell phone screen. It has 2 numbers which would probably reflect what picture number he was on. It said 51.
I think they originally thought area 51 which roswell happened in 1951 but had second thoughts.
also note of amusement.
go to FBI headquarters, when the newspaper is brought in, regarding unknown previous coconspirator. read the page, they edited only parts of the newspaper ie main picture and some text but ran the same exact text a second time and then leaves the old text regarding a school right after it.
AHH the power of DVD's to see things they didnt plan for us to see.
Dont believe me? Look at Fast and Furious Tokyo drift and look at all the mega crash screens. You can see the crash dummies in slowmo!
I was with the group that liked the second one best but gee, I hope I live long enough to see Natl Treasure III. Why the long wait seems rediculous and frankly I am afraid a lot of the youth will lose interest. They don't have that long of an attention span and the news of no movie until 2011 will really give producers time to make a lot of mondern exciting competitive and maybe even better movies. I like both movies but the first one seemed a bit too lucky for all the problems they had. I also like the romance of Nick Cage and his beauty. But seriously, not coming out until then is a bad idea I believe. I will watch it if I am still around. Even us senior citizens love exciting thrillers with a bit of romance in there and I have loved most of Nicolas Cages movies with the exception of a few.
SERIOUSLY??? Not until 2011. that will hurt the movie I think because a lot will have forgeotten the former first two. Blimy. Too long a wait for another sequel.
I love National Treasure and I know almost every line in the movie!!! I can't wait for the 3rd movie! I love 1 and 2! The end of National Treasure 2 made me so anxious for the third movie!!! I LOVE NATIONAL TREASURE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i actully loved both of them but i think the first one was better than the second the second i didnt like because i dont understand why mittcel didnt keep the door open until all of the water draind out.but i thought 2 was cool how the taingled in at the end when leaving us hanging how the president remines us about page 47.
WOW!!!!!!!!!! After watching both of the National Treasure movies I came in to send an e-mail to whomever it might be to PLEADE with them to do a third installment...to my GREAT SURPRISE there is going to be one. I CAN NOT WAIT. I just keep watching my DVD's and even when I see it on television I watch which ever one is showing.
Sandy, you're right it cannot be the arc. It is in a top secret government warehouse. Duh! An interesting thought on the sequal, or 3-qual. The president mentioned that he has an architectual history major at Yale, the home of skull and bones. The content of page 47 being life altering may pertain to the president's lineage or association with this organization. National Treasure 3 may have something to do a secret in the president's past that he requests Ben's help on.
The Next Movie is not going to be about Page 47, because Jon Tourtletaub said during the special features, that he was glad that the second movie went out of the country, and he was going to do that again in the next one, and page 47 is an american secret, meaning, in america...
I don't have any doubt that the script is well underway. The writers may have been on strike but their imaginations were not. It would have been stupid and shortsighted of them not to have at least brainstormed the possibilities while waiting for the strike to end. Even if they didn't write for movies again the idea could have been used elsewhere. As a writer myself, I know my imagination doesn't know the meaning of the word strike.
I think there are only a few life altering things they could have for page 47 would be something about Aliens or Atlantis. They can't go after the Arc of the Covenant or the Holy Grail, it's already been done. What's left? Aliens, Atlantis and perhaps the lost treasures that disappeared during World War two, though I don't know how life altering the WWII treasures would be.
Hey Rosalie, if your reading this I know why Thomas Gates name was on the page. You know how Ben finally gets to take a peek at the book of secrets, and their was talk about how the queen sent a letter to general albert pike with playfair sypher in it. Thomas gates name was on the page because he was a renowned puzzle solver and code cracker at the time even in England. So the Queen reffered Thomas Gates to Albert Pike, and he gave the info on the letter to one his henchmen, thats why his name was on the page he was reffered to by the queen to crack the playfair sypher. And do you remember at the begining when Wilkinson revealed the page in said "Thomas Gates, Artifex" Artifex means mastermind, and in this case mastermind of puzzles not the mastermind behind the assassination.
I love National Treasure and Pirates of the Caribbean, but why does the third National Treasure have to come out first before the forth Pirates film, the Pirates came before the gates family did, so the forth Pirates of the Caribbean should come in 2011 and National Treasure should come out in 2012. not the other way round.
It is obvious that page 47 will come up in one of the sequels, but so will the mystery they created around Harvey Kietel's character. Like how he knew the book existed in the first place. They will probably develop a plot line involving him more at some point.
Oh my God!!! I CANNOT wait until National Treasure 3 & 4!!!!!! I hope the 3rd one does deal with what's on Page 47 in the President's book, because I'm dying to know what it is!! I absolutely ADORE the NT movies and I got both of them on DVD the day they came out. :) I also adore Riley and his hotness (and hilarious sarcasm). Justin Bartha is the best actor ever!!! Can't wait until 2011!!!
P.S.: What's up with this review? Everyone that I know that saw NT2 said that they loved it! I never agree with the critics...
-love love love-
~Maria: National Treasure Fanatic
"It's a big, bluish-green man....with a strange-looking goatee...I'm guessing that's significant." [hugs statue] ~Riley
I LOVED both National Treasures!!! They are my favorite movies EVER! I love Justin Bartha and the whole historic mystery. It is the BEST! I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE!
Area 51 wouldn't make any sense because "The Presidents Book" is supposed to have all of that kind of information in it. A book with all of the nations secrets and they are going to leave out what happened at Roswell, not.
My family and I love the National Treasure movies!! We cannot wait until the third one comes out and to see where they go! I hope the same cast will be in it!
I absolutly CANT WAIT till national treasure 3!!!!!! I am obsessed with all of the movies. They give me a positive out-look on llife. they also make me want to be an explorer. I have no idea how you guys come up with the ideas for the movies... but whatever your doing KEPP UP THE GREAT WORK and i am looking forward to a FANTASIC AND MAGICAL NATIONAL TREASURE 3!!!!!
Well, frist off i just got done watching the 2nd one && decided to look online about the 3rd one, and iam excited for it, but 2011?! thats 3 years from now. Ill be in college by that time! but idc ill still go see the movie :) Just hope the 3rd one isnt dissapointing. Which iam sure it wont be. Really cant wait to see what page 47 holds for the 3rd movie, OH and lets not go for a 4th one, because that will be just plain stupid like the saw movies, && the scary movies, lets not keep on making more and more of the same movies just different things in them each time, but iam sure the 3rd one will be good :) just try and speed up the process! OH and when the frist one came out it sure didnt feel like 3 years later the 2nd one came out, well prob when the frist one came out i was kinda young, but then the 2nd one came out && i was older then haha. Anyways the moral of this paragraph is that IAM EXCITED FOR THE 3rd ONE!!!! even though i will be in college i still will go see it! keep up the good work guys and lets speed up the process. please && thank you!
I am a HUGE fan of the National Treasure series. I feel that the reference towards "Page 47" near the end, when Ben and party is brought to the airplane hanger where the President is at, is said to be 'life altering.' There are two 'life altering' items which I can think of. One is the Holy Grail and two is Ponce de Leon's 'Fountain Of Youth.' These two items have been sought after thoughout history. Both offer eternal life, which would make it 'life altering.'
I love both National Treasures, I can't wait for the 3rd one!!!!!! i'll see it opening night! The National Treasures are by far my favorite movies! Keep coming national treasures with history, excitement, fun, and of course Cage!
I have a friend on the inside--here with me matter of fact--we get a kick out of reading these theories...he can assure me it has nothing to do with aliens...other than that he won't say anything, furthermore he says no one will say anything, so if someone says "they heard from somebody"...it's just speculation.
I CAN NOT WAIT for the third movie! i loved the second one, altho i slightly like the first one better, they're both great! So I cant wait for number 3!
