Near Dark Remake On Hold![]()
You'd think that given the success of Twilight, people would be falling all over themselves to make their own version of an inter-species vampire love story. I mean, if Matt Reeves can get away with remaking Let the Right One In, surely it's a free world for anyone who wants to tell a tale of vampire romance.
But Platinum Dunes, Michael Bay's production company, is taking the opposite approach with their planned remake of Near Dark, the 1987 vampire-Western love story. Producer Brad Fuller told Empire Online that “Near Dark is probably not going to happen,” and laid the blame squarely at Twilight's feet. "I’m concerned that, conceptually, that Near Dark and Twilight are too similar in terms of a vampire movie. For now, that movie is on hold.” So "on hold" doesn't mean "dead," and presumably Near Dark could make a comeback once Twilight mania has subsided a bit. But is this maybe a sign that some movies don't need remakes? Or are there really fans of the original out there just itching to see it be remade. Personally I think we can let Edward and Bella corner the market on vampire romance, and leave the rest of us to tell-- shocking, I know-- new stories. |
