The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles attempted a comeback in 2007, with their first all-CGI movie TMNT. It wasn’t exactly a Transformers level success. Now they’re going back to what propelled the franchise to lofty heights among pizza-lovin kids in the 80s and 90s: Rubber suits.

Well maybe not rubber suits, but The Mirage Group is working on a new live action, ninja turtles movie. They’ve talked about doing this for awhile, but Variety says it’s finally moving forward as a prequel. The film, which they’re targeting for a 2011 release will be an origin story for Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, Raphael, and Splinter.

An origin story seems a little strange. I’ve never really thought of the turtles as having a particularly film worth origin. Weren’t they just a bunch of snappers who accidentally fell in radioactive ooze? How do you get an entire movie out of that? An origin montage maybe, but not an entire movie.
