We reported yesterday that New Moon was looking to have broken the box office record for midnight screenings, and now it's gone above and beyond even that. Variety is reporting that New Moon shattered the opening day box office record yesterday, bringing in $72.7 million, including the $26.3 million from midnight screenings.

Compare that to the $36 million that Twilight made on its opening day, and recognize that this whole Twilight thing is definitely not going away. Projections at Deadline Hollywood now have New Moon making $125 million over the weekend, which, fanboys will be relieved to hear, won't be enough to topple The Dark Knight's record of $158.4 million. But don't be surprised if Eclipse pulls it off next summer.
