Somewhere between John Wayne and Kevin Costner we all went out and bought into the idea that Native American Indians were all a beautiful, spiritual, and wonderful culture destroyed by the evil, arrogant, brutish white man. While the old Western's portrayal of them as vicious animals that need killin is certainly not accurate, our recent tendency to think of Indians as E.T. probably isn't either. They weren't called savages just to be mean.

Terence Malick's impending Colin Farrell powered flop The New World looks to be sticking firmly to the E.T. approach complete with hot, naked, underage native women swimming through the water ripe for Colin's plucking. It's the whole John Smith/Pocahontas thing that Disney messed up a few years ago and has made it's way to movie screens more times than the Battle of the Alamo.
