Nicole Kidman Sings As Dusty Springfield

By Josh Tyler: 2008-05-02 01:39:04
Nicole Kidman Sings As Dusty Springfield I know musician biopics have been really successful, but maybe, just maybe we’ve taken them a little too far. I get making a movie about someone like Johnny Cash or Ray Charles… but Dusty Springfield? Huh?

Dusty Sprinfield was a British pop singer, the most successful British pop singer of the British invasion. Apparently female singers weren’t very successful in invading America, because I’ve never heard of her. Nicole Kidman on the other hand, has not only heard of her, she’s playing her in a new movie about Dusty’s life for Fox 2000. They’re lucky they landed Nicole, because without her I can’t think of a single reason why anyone would ever want to see this.

The funny thing is that this project that no one will care about is so hot right now that not one, but two movies are being made about Dusty. The one with Nicole is probably the most likely to be watched by anyone, just because it has Nicole. But Variety says Universal has a competing Dusty Springfield project going, with Kristen Chenoweth set to star. I’m pretty sure most people aren’t even interested in seeing a movie about Rick Springfield, let alone two movies about some forgotten songstress named Dusty.

  1. William Says:

You've never heard of Dusty Springfield? Think "Son of a Preacher Man" for a start.

I might have to stop reading Cinema Blend if this continues.

  1. Nell Says:

Son of a Preacher Man, Josh. That's why this is important.

  1. Dave Says:

You've never heard of Dusty Springfield?
    What a freak!

  1. Sabrina Says:

Now, I dig Nicole Kidman, and I love Dusty Springfield's music, especially the song Wishin and Hoping but did you really need to deliver a cheapshot of a smackdown to another worthy artist in order to elevate either of them? That's simply not fair.

Maybe you should educate yourself more on Rick Springfield before you go slamming him. I know a LOT of people who would pay to see a movie about him! His story about the road to success is different but just as interesting as Dusty's. Also, He is still alive, he STILL has a pretty sizable international fanbase, he has achieved icon status with his 1981 hit Jesse's Girl which has been used in a number of movies such as Boogie Nights, and even though he's 59 he is STILL very handsome and is STILL performing to full houses! He's not out of the game yet...he also has a NEW CD coming out in July.

So if you haven't heard of someone that's a qualification for not making a movie about them? hmmm....

Anyway, she sang Son of a Preacher Man (its in Pulp Fiction) and she had one of the best voices ever. I cant really see the point in making the movie other than to watch someone mime her songs which Im sure I could watch on Youtube if I so wished... which I don't.

oh and she's definitely not forgotten, at least not in England.

  1. Matt Says:

Sweet. We have a singer no one knows who did a song a lot of people remember getting a movie. Guess we had best get ready to hear the life stories of Timbuk 3, a-Ha and Los Del Rio.

    I can hardly wait.

  1. markus Says:

Dusty Springfield was one of the biggest pop stars on EARTH during the 1960's (and had MANY other hits besides "Son of a Preacher Man"), and from what I've heard, had quite a rollercoaster life, so just because YOU have not heard of her, it does not mean doing the film is a bad idea.

Seriously, were it not for EVITA, how many average Joe's would even know who Eva Peron was????

  1. claire montrose Says:

    Windmills of My Mind.

  1. Mark Dellow Says:

    Not heard of Dusty Springfield.

    Huh.

Well, I guess there had to be someone : I admit I'd thought it might be some Japanese soldier lost in the jungle somewhere who still thinks World War II is going on, but hey ...

Just for the record, Dusty Springfield did a lot more than just 'Son Of a Preacher Man' ( which by the way was famous long before Pulp Fiction, and for that matter long before Quentin Tarantine ). To describe Dustty Springfield as 'A' British pop singer is like describing the Beatles as 'A' British pop group. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that she's regarded by many as one of the most influential female singers of the twentieth century. Will people watch the movie? - Well, while it seems entirely questionable whether or not Nicole Kidman will do the role justice, I'd bet that there are many singers who are alive and well today who wouldn't mind the audience that this film will have.

Word of advice, Mr. Tyler : you're entitled to your ignorance, but advertising it on a website is just abusing the privilege.

  1. Cosmogogogurl Says:

Never heard of Dusty Springfield? And you claim to know something about the entertainment industry. Yeah, sure. Her rise to fame was meteoritic, spanning three continents. Her personal struggle as a closeted silent Lesbian who never entertained the company of a man is intriguing, to say the least, at the dawn of the early Woman's Movement. She was a supporter and vanguard for Civil Rights and Equality; Martha Reeves of the Vandellas was her personal friend; Dusty was kind, inclusive and endearing.
