Since it's a prequel, it's logical to assume that J.J. Abram's new Star Trek movie won't involve Leonard Nimoy or Williams Shatner. Apparently, that assumption would be wrong.
Nimoy recently spoke with Jam Movies and revealed that both he and Shatner might be involved. He reveals: "The head of production at Paramount called my agency to tell them about this project and they are aware of Bill's and my contribution to the franchise, and they'd like us to know they might want some involvement. It was all very, very general."
Obviously, Leonard and Bill are too old to play the young Spock and Kirk that might be used in Abrams' film. Nimoy thinks Abrams' has a cameo in mind. "They might possibly want Bill and I to set up the story as a flashback. But that's just conjecture on my part." Makes sense. That's the only reason I can come up with for their involvement.
If nothing else, the fact that they're calling the real Kirk and Spock about being in the film lends more credibility to the idea that Abrams' movie will indeed be about a younger version of the characters. It'd be nice if he'd just go ahead and confirm that already, the endless speculation is starting to get annoying.
If they do call in Shatner and Nimoy, we know Bill at least is ready to be involved. A few weeks ago he loudly proclaimed his willingness to be in the new Trek film here. But then is there anything Shatner won't do? From paintball, to roasts, to Denny Crane he's up for anything. I wouldn't have him any other way.
