Two filmmaking guilds handed out their awards over the weekend, and like so many other awards given this Oscar season, you can't stop what's coming. No Country for Old Men walked away with the Cinema Audio Society award for best sound mixing as well as the Art Director's Guild award for best production design in a contemporary feature. It managed to at least share the wealth with the production designers, since There Will Be Blood won for best period feature, and The Golden Compass won what might be its only award for best fantasy feature.
The real story of the night might be about who lost: Kevin J. O'Connell, the sound designer for Transformers, is nominated for his 17th Oscar this year, but he's never won. He beats out legendary losers like Peter O'Toole for the losingest Oscar nominee in history. Not winning the guild award doesn't bode well for his chances next Sunday night; Transformers had some cool crunching robot metal sounds, but it pales in comparison to Anton Chigurh unscrewing a lightbulb in the hallway while Llewellyn Moss awaits his fate.
As we reported yesterday, Dreamgirls director Bill Condon won the filmmaker award, and apparently gave a lovely speech. Variety's Oscar pundit Kris Tapley had a full report on the night, and also captured a hilarious photo, at least hilarious within the Oscar blogging world. Tom O'Neil, who also does Oscar blogging for Variety, was recording a video podcast with gracious loser O'Connell-- and managed to get Condon to tape it for him (check out the photo below). That's an Oscar-nominated director, manning a digital camera to make a podcast. I guess you're never too big to turn in a favor, huh?
