No End In Sight For Spider-Man![]()
As we reported a a few weeks ago, Sony is going to keep the Spider-Man franchise moving along for many years to comes But you really don’t need some smart-ass movie website to tell you that. You hear about the box office take for all three movies (capped by Spider-Man 3’s $148 million on opening weekend) and you figure the studio will want more, more, more. How many more? According to Sony’s top dog, as many as we are willing to shell out the bucks for.
The BBC interviewed Sony Pictures CEO Michael Lynton and he said that “everybody has every intention of making a fourth, a fifth and a sixth” movie in the series. That’s pretty much what Sam Raimi said earlier, but Lyton ominiously added “and on and on.” Now ignoring the fact that “everybody” does not have every intention of making more movies (Raimi, Tobey Maguire, and Kirsten Dunst are far from committed to continue,) the whole “on and on” aspect leaves one wondering how far from the genius of Spider-Man 2 they will get. When will Sony put the breaks on this juggernaut and bring the series to a conclusion? According to Lyton they will keep making “as many as we can make good stories for.” But this is a studio executive talking, so what he really means is “until it becomes unprofitable.” The good story aspect went out the window on the most recent offering (a good movie, but not a very good story) and by movie 5 or 6, the well will probably be completely dry. But, as long as you and I keep plunking down hard earned cash, that costume will sling across New York. |
