Nolan And Goyer Talk Dark Knight Sequel Villains

Nolan And Goyer Talk Dark Knight Sequel Villains Anyone who doesn’t think The Dark Knight is about to become the biggest box office hit of 2008, is probably in my Fantasy Moguls Box Office league and couldn’t afford to purchase The Dark Knight for their studio. I am one of those people. Hey, I wanted The Pineapple Express, ok? But fantasy competition aside, this thing is going to be huge, and that means a sequel of some sort is already all but guaranteed.

Recently writers Jonathan Nolan and David Goyer sat down with the guys over at Movieonline, where they talked a little about who they’d like to use for Batman 3, when the inevitable becomes reality. They seem determined to do something unpredictable. Goyer says, “We’re not going to tell you other than to say Batman has been published for 70 years. In the first movie we used Ra’s Al Ghul and the Scarecrow who had not been in the movies before and had not been in the 60s TV show and there are dozens, if not hundreds of other characters that fit that bill. Everyone says you have to use the Penguin or Catwoman. Well, I completely disagree.”

I see what he’s saying, it makes sense. They’ve already been done, and in the case of Catwoman and Penguin I think done pretty well. Batman has a huge rogues gallery, the best bunch of villains in any comic book character’s history. Why not explore some of those? I’d love to see Clayface for instance. Or maybe Nolan could finally do Mr. Freeze properly, so we can all forget about the horrible things Arnold Schwarzenegger did to them. It’s nice to hear anyway, that they’re considering new pathways, even though they’ve gone back to the Joker for this particular film.

  • i also caught a clue for catwoman in the dark knight...when wayne asks if his suit can withstand dog bites, morgan freeman says it could probably take a bite from a cat, so i think catwoman will def make an appearance
  • I would like to see Christopher Lloyd as the Riddler in the sequel.. I think he could play a real creepy obsessive compulsive psychopath.
  • I think the notion that obscure villains need to be used in order to keep the story fresh is absurd. Simply remodeling the characters to fit a more "realistic" mold would work. It worked beautifully in the case of the Joker. I could definitely imagine an OCD serial killer paradigm for the Riddler. In fact a good plot outline might reside in a new mob boss rising to power to fill the void left by Salvatore Maroni's death (a good place for Oswald Cobblepot to make an appearance), hiring or enlisting the services of the Riddler to kill prominent members of Gotham.
Or perhaps they will use the Penguin as he has been used in so many adaptations: Running for Mayor...only this time winning on an anti-Batman platform. Using police resources to pursue Batman while operating a criminal empire on the side. Perhaps here the introduction of Hush could be prudent. It would be the penultimate threat to what Batman stands for: Ridding Gotham of corruption. On the side, we could see the Riddler making an appearance as the aforementioned serial killer who leaves puzzles for Batman to solve. However, I do not wish to see Johnny Depp in the role of the Riddler. I would prefer Robert Downey Jr. As the Penguin, I couldn't have a better choice than Philip Seymour Hoffman (he showed some nice menace as Owen Davain in Mission Impossible 3). As for Hush? I have no idea, perhaps Clive Owen or some other action star.
Trying to re-invent characters such as Mr. Freeze
  • I would really love to see Talia al Ghul come in the story. She hasn't been adapted in a film, and with the new vacancy of Bruce/Batman's love intrest, she could be a really good addition. If there's a possibility of multiple sequels, they should expand her character a bit, such as developing feelings for Bruce. Then when she finds out he killed her father, it would tear her loyalties.
    Just a suggestion.
  • i think the joker may be mentioned in it or may be recast and given a small part, but they cannot recreate a whole other joker movie without heath ledger
  • And another FYI for people. Nolan has gone ON RECORD stating, and I quote, "if Robin makes an appearance in any of my movies, I will chain myself up and refuse to come into work."

There will be NO Robin. NONE, ZIP, ZILCH. Nolan is practically disgusted with the idea of one. So you can get that out of your heads too.
  • Ok, honestly people, this is NOT rocket science. you can argue five ways to Sunday about why that cow you see might be a horse, but it's still a freaking cow.

Two-Face is DEAD. Like a doornail, like my grandfather, like the bee-gees. DEAD. It says so in the accompanying book, and YOU SEE IT IN THE FILM. I'm tired of reading crap like oh, Dent is dead but Two-Face lives! I don't care that they were alternate personalities. If the body the two of them are in DIES, then they BOTH die. And here's the deal about the fall, people. You can fall five freaking feet and die. It all depends on how you land. Obviously Batman has experience falling well, which is how he can make jumps of the same equivalent height and not break his legs like the mobster did. God forbid they luck out and Dent be the one with the snapped neck. Christ people, GET OVER IT. We call that logic.

As for villains..hmm...I'm all for Duela appearance. Anyone else with me? Though she's TECHNICALLY the daughter of Dent, she's psycho and claims to be a ton of kids daughter. And since literally nothing is known about Joker's past, it's plausible to bring her in as the messed-up vengeful daughter of the Joker.
  • I see no reason why the whole Dick Greyson/ Robin deal wouldn't work in Christopher Nolan's take on the Batman-franchise. I mean, i hear what you're sayin, and i agree with Nolan and Bale in that, Robin is a pretty cheesey, campy kinda character...but that's because we're all still pretty poisened by previous performances of this character.
And besides, before 'Batman Begins', who knew Bats himself could be so dark and...dare i say it...so serious!
I mean, take a look at Adam West's Batman....funny as hell....then there's Michael Keaton's/Val Kilmer's version.....plain and boring, totaly no depth or range.........and as for George Clooney.....yeah, let's not remember that one....hehe, nipple-suit.....anyway, what im saying is all Robin needs is to get that same re-invention.
Drop the happy-go-lucky bright-eyed boy wonder with his corny yet comical one-liners. Infact, cast the character in his late teens for when his parents die, so that he's battleing teen-angst, aswell as evil and corruption.
If you keep him with a negative attitude, so that he pretty much mirrors Bruce Wayne, that'd make the whole transition into Nightwing more plausible.
I believe that given the right amount of attention, Robin could end up being pretty frickin awesome, and maybe we can all learn to forget what Joel Schumacher did to him.
As for villians for the next film....im all for Catwoman...so long as Cher is definetly out of the running.....man Nolan was trippin that day. The Riddler...yeah, interesting, but too much like The Joker...i mean, it could work, it'd just be less impressive....especialy with Johnny Depp playin him...Depp has taken on some difficult roles in the past, and made them so amazing and entirely his own...its just, he does it so much, the novelty has kinda worn. I bet he could play the Riddler...i bet he'd do it really well....it just wouldn't be surprising or entertaining anymore....now when i see him in movies, its no longer "Hey that's Captain Jack"...its more like "Hey, there's Johnny Depp playin Captain Jack".
And the Penguin....meh!......the funniest thing is watchin Phillip Seymour Hoffman on youtube laughin bout the rumours about him as the Penguin. If he has no idea about it...chances are its bull sh*t.
Having said all that, im defenetly interested in seeing where Nolan takes this next...and even if Cher is Catwoman, i'll probably still be there, lined up, first day, first session, with my novelty Batman cup from the Candy Bar...waitin to see what's next for Bats.
  • I dont think Batman killed Harwey Dent he just could no save him becausse he had to choose between him and Gordons kid and so he saved him, just like in the first film where he did not save his mentor in the train scene.
  • Most likely robin (whether a caped crusader or young Dick Grayson would not be there). Chronologicaly just Dick Grayson would make sense nothing more, nothing less. True it would not be unwise to use Robin as a character. Unfortunately you cannot use nightwing for the same exact reason. Reason being FIRST OF ALL ROBiN IS NiGHTWiNG AS AN ADULT. BUT FIRST HE STARTS OUT AS ROBIN. BUT YEAH I WOULD RATHER SEE ROBIN FLASHBACKS IN NIGHTWING MOVIE RATHER THAN PUTTING HIM AS AS A SIDEKICK.
  • Forget about Robin. Bale already said he wouldn't do a film with Robin.

Nightwing on the other hand? How amazing would that be? And how cool would he look?! I don't know about y'all, but Nightwing is just as badass as Batman in my book. Freakin amazing.
  • Hi! I have seen all your comments and i have just the answer.
I am Michelle Anderson and I'm the secretary and a close friend of Mr. Christopher Nolan for the last 3 years.

I have just talked with him together with Mr. Goyer and it is indeed obvious that The Riddler will be the villain in the third film of the Nolan Series.

There's only one problem left in their hands and this is the actor who will portray this villain.

They made up their minds and it is either David Tennant or Johnny Depp. Just the two of them.

  • Well the question is whether the Nolan franchise should be just three films? Or two or more. The truth is there are a lot of good stories involving Batman , his enemies. Or even his allies. I believe that Nolan is the king of director who can turn mucus to gold. I wonder how he will play this one out. Whether he will be traditional with modern touches, take new spin on things or just end it?
  • If the Riddler is done in the next movie, I expect and will not settle for him unless I see him in tears on screen. I've always imagined the Riddler as being such an obsessive type of personality that he would literally break down and be unable to function if he can't solve something or if someone supercedes his intelligence level. The Riddler thinks he's the ultimate at whatever he does - the technology, the human psychological understanding, etc. He's always a step ahead and if he falls behind he cannot mentally handle it. Personally I'd like to see Joaquin Phoenix try his hand at the role, or for a different take Don Cheadle. Both of them are very emotive in their acting and could portray a wildly upset individual I think.
  • The Mad Hatter - Son of rich socialite, able to afford practically anything, rivalling Batman in both combat and influence.

Jervis 'Jerry' Tetch uses the weakening mob as foot soldiers for insane plan to finish what he though the Joker couldn't: plunge Gotham into total chaos. Hateful towards the Joker's failure, he has him killed. As his reign of terror progresses, his mental stability begins to degrade, becoming a schizophrenic, antisocial borderline psychotic because of Batman's constant ability to apprehend the mobsters, maintaining 'order', a concept which greatly disgusts Tetch. He soon has an idea in his head that the idea of law and order is a perversion, thinking the 'true natural order' is that there isn't one, anarchy is humanity's greatest impulse and plans to 'unleash it' in Gotham City.
  • Personall, I think that Depp should play the Mad Hatter in a new Batman film as he will be playing the Hatter in Tim Burton's version of Alice in Wonderland.

It would be an easy transition.
  • poster of my take on depp as the riddler

    http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f51/Sammilky/riddlerdepp-1.jpg
  • Michael Caine confirmed Johnny Depp and Philip Semour Hoffman for the next Batman film what roles they will play is still unknown but we can probably guess.

As far as Two Face Eckhart said he will not be in the third one ,but producer of the Dark Knight said that it doesn't mean he won't come back as his fall was "open ended". Meaning it can go either way. They will confirm it in the sequel though.

Then again Scarecrow was not shown in the trailers or barely commented on when TDK was comming out ,so like I said who knows. One thing people on this forum will agree on is that the actually want two face in the next one. If dead resurrect him if not simply bring him back. In the comics that Nolan uses as basis the main plot is that Two Face sqeezes Mafia hard so they loose money and turn to desperation. And ask their soldiers and associated to find ways to extort. In comes Zucco ........
  • Two Face is DEAD!!! Aaron Eckhart said himself that he was 100 % dead.

    TWOFACE IS DEAD!!!!!!!!!
  • I would have to say that this generation of batman movies is the best so far. The next movie has to have another mastermind villain. So penguin, catwoman, or poison ivy would be garbage ideas for the villain in the 3rd batman film. In my opinion even though they were villains, but yet henchman or pawns. The perfect idea for a villain in the batman film is the Riddler. With all the politics within the movie he would be perfect. Last but not least they should not take out the Joker. His work is not yet finished.....I beleive they can find an actor to mimic Heath Ledgers performance and that would be Johnny Depp. As for the third film it should be an ellicit mind-bending masterpiece that has the Riddler (Johnny Depp) The Joker (Leonardo Di Caprio) and Two-Face ( Aaron Eckhart) all working together but in a disharmonius way causing an intellectual satire. People might think im crazy for Leonardo Di Caprio but he could pull it off especially after watching his role in the Departed.... although getting those actors would be a huge budget but I could see it happen
  • JOSEPH GORDON LEVITT as the next JOKER a tribute to late HEATH LEDGER...Levitt 27 yrs now and everyone look at the mans picture looks exactly like Heath ledger....
  • hey eh the erebody. yo dogs. what up? listen the scene where batman hangs sal maroni over the ledge and sal comments on bein one professional to another, from this height the fall won't kill me. well maybe nolan did a lidl 4 shadowing like hes done b4shadowing. harvey dent did not die from the fall. they needed to claim he was dead because if he woke up out of his , he would be just as much of a plauge to gatham as the joker, they are probly keeping dent in the narrows.....wich you know will been in a sequA l or two, arkham common., getting preety full scarecrow, joker, ...hehahohahahohohehhhooo two face. anyone who thing Egghart wont be back as big, bad , harvvvv 2354555432
is probly dosing on fear gas .......and what about theagensurgents that were set into play by the goats head in batman begins. no im sure the league of sha(asassins)doughs just t@ssed in the cards when al ghoul was kelled . yep, beat feat boss ins dead.......no one has any idea what nolan is gana pull out of his mad hat. does anyone dougt it? i dont like to thing of the dark knight as the best bAtmN movie ever made, lets looke at it in respects as the best comic book movie ever made if not film in general. &)!@213+o0 omockstatinno ?how do you see the wreiting before is on the wall?
  • Riddler or Poison Ivy please. They both make sense.

Poison Ivy would provide a reason for Wayne to not keep Batman hidden - because she would attack Bruce Wayne, head of industry and all that she despises.

Riddler's potential is great. An obsessive compulsive who dabbles in cyber terrorism or something similarly relevant in this day and age. I loved the idea of him following The Joker's footsteps but disagreeing with his ideals and instead of being totally self absorbed and hedonistic, maybe he actually believes he's the good guy trying to find Batman, as he gets closer to the truth he becomes more obsessed with exposing it, to the point where he's willing to kill and commit terrible acts and gets lost in the "game" himself, losing his mind and falling prey to the "the worst things have been done in the best of intentions" thing. That would also provide a good reflection for Wayne - as he sees Nygma decend into obsession, he realises he could also end up doing the same as Batman. Sounds good to me.

You could even have a cool moment where Batman/Wayne realises that he NEEDS people like Joker and Riddler in order to define who he is. Joker alluded to it the first film "you complete me" - well maybe Batman realises he needs villains like Riddler in order to complete him - to keep him on the straight and narrow because they are like a moral barometer to him - they help keep his own morality and corruptability in check. In many ways, the insane criminals of Gotham keep Batman ticking, they keep him sane.

I'd love to see Scarecrow a third time too. I still think there's tons more untapped potential for that character.

Penguin could work but drop the goofiness (have it as a nickname but keep the character straight) and have him as the new crimeboss Kingpin type person capitalising on Jokers sudden apprehension, much like Maroni did with Falcone's gang between BB and TDK.

Has ANYONE also thought about other non-powerred heroes turning up. Batman is a fugitive now right? According to everyone but Jim Gordon, he's a criminal. Couldn't we see other characters, heroes, anti-heroes and villains, drafted in to take him down: Green Arrow, The Question, Huntress, Deathstroke, Deadshot etc? Could this also provide a place for Catwoman?
  • guys we kinda need bane! he can be this cool martial artist guy who can actually fight batman. Like a super cool fist fight on top of a building or somethin. And riddler might be cool for a mental challenge against batman. And i like that guys idea about the batman beyond movie that would be sweet!
  • i think that if nolan does bring in the riddler it would be a pretty interesting movie. Lets face it, you cant use joker again. Maybe at the end of the 3rd movie, gordon puts on the bat signal, and batman comes, asking whats wrong, and gordon could reply, "its the Joker. Hes taking 6 hostages on so and so, and then batman could reply something snarky like "not again" or something. But you defintely cant use a new joker. Again, with the riddler. He was a very big part in the comics, and even though he had a smart intllectual side to him, he also had that strange, psychoticness to him like the joker. And, you dont need Two-face to introduce Riddler. As well as nolan has done with the movies, im sure they can find a "real" life situation to bring him in. I personally own every batman comic there ever was, and every episode and movie made, so i now pretty muh all the characters, and riddler by far is the only one i could see in the 3rd movie if they make one. I could see them adding catwoman, but not as a huge role. As for other characters, the fictional ones would never make it, but smaller, more life like ones could be starred as smaller roles throughout the movie. I could also see the 3rd movie starting out with a villian onthe loose and batman chasing him down, kinda like what they did in batman forever with two face. Preferbly, the could introduce Scaface and wesker if the did do that. The only other villians i think they could add is bane as a hyped up drug user that o'd on to much steroids, and the body. Otherwise this movie would turn out a drag. ANd please, as much as i enjoy the batman franchise and all the orginal characters, no robin. that wouldnt be fair to Bale's performance. and finally, if they do cast the riddler, i think his title saying should stay as "Riddle me this..".
