It can’t be a coincidence that the newest trailer for The Nut Job has some serious Lord of the Rings undertones. Or more likely, Hobbit undertones, as the latest preview for the Open Road 3D animated film has released just in time for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug to arrive in theaters. Gollum may have his eye on a ring, but Will Arnett’s Nut Job character Surly seems to have gone "a little nuts" over some precious acorns. Meanwhile, in absence of a proper dragon, a friendly pug will have to do. Adventure awaits this furry group of animated animals in The Nut Job, due out January 17.

Set in the fictional city of Oakton, The Nut Job centers on a mischievous squirrel named Surly (Will Arnett) and his rat friend Buddy as they plan a nut store heist in an effort to feed the whole park for winter. Because what better way to stockpile food than by raiding the "lost city of Nut-lantis!" a.k.a. Maury’s Nut Shop (EST. 1892). As you can imagine, things get really nutty. Sorry (not really). Beyond a lot of nut jokes, it looks like these animals are in for a big adventure, which could translate to a great story… or a lot of painful (or glorious) nut puns.

Here’s the previously released full trailer for the movie:

It seems like there’s sort of an Over the Hedge vibe to this movie. The 2006 DreamWork’s animated pic also happened to be about a group of small animals living in a human-populated area, plotting an elaborate scheme to steal food. In the case of The Nut Job, the nut theme appears to be one of the major differences, plot-wise. And the city backdrop, as opposed to the suburbs.

Directed by Peter Lepeniotis, The Nut Job’s voice cast includes Will Arnett, Katherine Heigl, Brendan Fraser, Maya Rudolph, Jeff Dunham and Liam Neeson. The film arrives in theaters nationwide in 3D on January 17, 2014. Poster

No nuts, no glory!
