The next feature, by 28 Days Later and Trainspotting director Danny Boyle has been scrapped after complaints.
3000 Degrees was to be a true-life story based on the true-life story of fire-fighters who battled a blaze at a storage warehouse in Worcester, Massachusetts. Six of the men who battled the blaze lost their lives.
But several families involved objected, backed by local and Canadian firefighters who were due to supply equipment and appear as extras.
Warner Bros said it would not move ahead with the project "at this time".
Frank Raffa, president of the Worcester Firefighters Local 1009 union, said his concern was that the families and their children would have to relive the tragedy if the film was made, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Showing just how concerned he was for the families he rather flippantly said; "This fire had to be put out. I asked my brothers not to co-operate."
The film was due to star Ed Harris and Woody Harrelson and was based on Sean Flynn's book, 3000 Degrees: The True Story of a Deadly Fire and the Men Who Fought It.
Interestingly, the Union is so concerned with protecting the families from reliving the tragedy, their website has a whole photo-gallery devoted to the incident.
