Though we’ve all seen a lot of “unofficial” photos from the upcoming Spielberg adaptation of War of the Worlds, today marks the first officially released photo from the WoW camp. It symbolizes everything that is absolutely wrong-headed about this re-adaptation, remake, or whatever you want to call it.

The picture is of Dakota Fanning being cuddled by Tom Cruise. This is evil because while in the novel the main character has a family, his journey amidst the Martian invasion is mainly one of solitary survival, in fact that’s kind of the point of the entire thing. I suppose Steven though maybe he needed a Muppet to talk to, and since Kermit wasn’t available or had too much dignity, the Spiel went with Miss Fanning. Haley Joel Osment she isn’t.
