Ah, the slow news days of the end of the year. If you don’t have a “best of” or year end recap to put up, it’s getting hard to find news, so some places will run just about anything they can get their hands on. I’ll admit, I’m among them. Hell, I have a quota to meet. The studios aren’t so concerned about such things, however, so it’s time to scrape for those tidbits, but that’s no excuse for shoddy journalism.

Take the news surrounding Wolverine going around the web right now. First we hear that the powers that be behind X-Men Origins: Wolverine may be considering pop star Natalie Imbruglia for its cast. Looking around, now some sites are reporting that they may be considering supporting actor Bailey Chase for a surprising role – one that hasn’t popped up in a few months: the ragin’ Cajun, Gambit.

If you don’t know Chase’s name, don’t be embarrassed. The actor played one of the supporting members of the Initiative in the fourth season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, so he wasn’t exactly a prominent fixture on the show. More recently he’s been playing a detective on Holly Hunter’s Saving Grace. However, the actor let it slip that he was in talks for a confidential role in the Wolverine movie: ”about 30 years old, a charming southern guy on the surface but he's got some ulterior motives going on underneath. By the end of the film, he's probably not going to be such a nice guy.” Speculation is the character, code named “Mr. Yellow” might be the fan-favorite mutant Gambit, who crosses paths and attitudes with Wolverine in the X-Men comics.

Now, we haven’t heard much news about Gambit being a part of the Wolverine movie since October, when there were location scouting reports around Louisiana. So, the sudden discussion of the character popping up again should be quite interesting… if the interview with Chase wasn’t also from back in October. Take a look at the date on the New Zealand Sunday Star Times and you’ll see that Chase’s interview is months old.

So… it’s unlikely Chase is still being considered for the role by this point. It’s even unlikely Gambit is still a part of the movie, since we haven’t heard much about the role and filming is supposed to start soon on the picture. Then again, we haven’t heard much about any of the roles other than Hugh Jackman reprising Wolverine, so I suppose anything is possible at this point.
