Alongside all of the magical performances and movie moments that stay in the minds of movie lovers, there is a list of “what might have been” performances. What would The Wizard of Oz been like with Buddy Ebsen instead of Jack Haley? Would Christopher Walken have been a decent Han Solo in Star Wars? Now we have another “what if” to add to the list.
In a recent interview with MTV Movie Blog, Hitman star Timothy Olyphant revealed that he was in talks with J.J. Abrams to appear in the upcoming Star Trek movie. According to the star he attended a secret casting session and had a series of conversations and e-mails with Abrams, but ultimately decided he wasn’t a good fit.
Olyphant doesn’t give any clue towards the role he was being considered for, but as a rising star I can’t imagine it wouldn’t be one of the leads. Could Olyphant have pulled off Kirk or McCoy? Or maybe the Live Free or Die Hard villain would have been considered for Kirk’s predecessor, Captain Pike? Unfortunately, we don’t know.
The weird thing is that Olyphant sounds enthusiastic about working with Abrams. It was a very flattering experience. If he called to ask me to do anything I would do it. I’m a huge fan of his. He was really great.” In the end, Olyphant isn’t too heartbroken over the decision not to be involved as he’s not that big a Trekkie/Trekker.
