Ophelia Lovibond Will Help Jim Carrey Wrangle Penguins
There's already one hot lady on board for the Jim Carrey-starring Mr. Popper's Penguins, and that's the indomitable Carla Gugino. So where is another beautiful woman going to fit into a story about a man overwhelmed with a flock of goofy penguins living in his house? I guess since this is Hollywood there's always room for another pretty lady. According to THR, British up-and-comer Ophelia Lovibond has also signed on to the film, to play Mr. Popper's personal assistant.
Gugino, of course, will be playing the wife, and since this is a children's movie we have to assume there won't be any love triangle nonsense going on-- though it would be kind of hilarious if there were, right? The THR article also contains a brief plot synopsis, and predictably, it veers away from the classic 1938 children's books in all the ways you were dreading:
Penguins tells the story of a high-powered businessman (Carrey) who inherits six penguins. As he gets acquainted with, and increasingly attached to, his winged roommates, Popper's life quickly unravels. His swanky New York apartment is turned into a snowy winter wonderland, the deal he's long been working on is derailed, and he almost lands in jail. But thanks to his new charges, Popper comes to understand the importance of family, human and otherwise.
Yup, that's pretty depressing. As for Lovibond, you can catch her opposite Aaron Johnson as John Lennon's love interest in Nowhere Boy, and she's also in William Monahan's London Boulevard, whenever that comes out.
