Oscar Docs Shortlist Leaves Out Some Fan Favorites![]()
Believe it or not, the Academy has already made some decisions on who will get Oscars next year! The documentary feature category is one of the few that releases shortlists of films that will be considered for the year, and the Academy has narrowed their selections down to 12. Of course, it wouldn't be the Oscars if they weren't ruffling some feathers, so Oscar nuts are already discussing the shocking omissions.
Awards Daily posted the full list, and got their commenters talking about some of the most surprising exclusions. Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired, Marina Zenovich's documentary about the controversial filmmaker, is missing. So is Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, which was directed by Alex Gibney, who won the doc category last year for Taxi to the Dark Side. Also missing are American Teen, one of my personal favorites, Religulous, which starred Bill Maher, and Dear Zachary, a tiny, sentimental indie that deserved a bigger push. Of course, plenty of deserving nominees made it in-- Werner Herzog's latest Encounters at the End of the World, Tribeca hit Man on Wire, and acclaimed Hurricane Katrina documentary Trouble the Water. I'd expect all three of those films to make the final cut, along with Pray the Devil Back to Hell and probably Standard Operating Procedure, which has the legendary Errol Morris behind it. Check out the full list below for yourself. While most of these movies didn't come close to box office success, most of them are worth your time-- and may help you win that Oscar betting pool come February. |
