Oscar Nominee Jacki Weaver In Talks For David O. Russell's Silver Linings Playbook
The plot of David O. Russell's new film, The Silver Linings Playbook, tells the story of a high school teacher named Pat Peoples who is put in a mental hospital for four years. Upon his release, he is sent to live with his mom and is determined to ex-wife back, but becomes involved with his young, slightly off-kilter neighbor. Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence have already been cast in the two principal roles, but the supporting cast has yet to really fill out. We still don't know who will be playing Pat's ex-wife, but today it looks like he's gained a mother.
THR has learned that Jacki Weaver, best known for playing Janine 'Smurf' Cody in David Michôd's Animal Kingdom (for which she received an Oscar nomination), is now in negotiations to play Bradley Cooper's keeper in The Silver Linings Playbook. The movie would be yet another American project for the Australian actress, who completed work on Nicholas Stoller's Five Year Engagement this summer and will be working with director Chan-wook Park in the Wentworth Miller-scripted Stoker. Adapted from the Matthew Quick novel by David O. Russell, production is scheduled to gear up later this fall.
It would seem that The Silver Linings Playbook is proving to be a reunion for 2010 Oscar nominees that didn't quite grab the gold. On top, of course, you have Russell, who was given the Best Director nod for The Fighter but lost out to Tom Hooper and The King's Speech. On the acting side in addition to Weaver, Jennifer Lawrence was nominated for Best Actress, but saw Natalie Portman walk out the door with the the golden statue. I hope Bradley Cooper doesn't feel left out.
