Out of Ideas: The John Edwards Story![]()
It seems to me like the well of ideas in Hollywood has run dry. No one seems to be able to write their own original pieces anymore, with the exception of the chosen few who refuse to adapt an old TV show or remake a two-year-old foreign film. The bottom of the barrel has been scraped and that's where the John Edwards story has been found.
John Edwards' life may or may not be interesting enough to make a feature film about. After all he was the vice presidential candidate in 2004 and was a U.S. Senator for six years. It certainly sounds like there could be some film-worthy actions and accounts in his life that would be worth putting in the public eye. But we all know John Edwards for another reason, and it's almost guaranteed that that'll wind up being the focus of this film. Despite all his political achievements, his work with the homeless, and his presidential run, the focus of the film will almost undoubtedly be his sordid affair with Rielle Hunter, with whom he fathered an illegitimate child, all while his wife was being treated for breast cancer. That plot reads like a shitty Lifetime original movie and it will probably turn out as such. According to the NY Daily News, the film will be adapted from a memoir written by Andrew Young, Edwards' former aide. No one has been set to write the screenplay just yet, but big deal writer Aaron Sorkin's name has been tossed around. Sorkin, no stranger to political intrigue, created and penned the popular show The West Wing, so at least it'll be written better than a Lifetime movie. There's definitely a possibility that the producers will put together a John Edwards movie that will focus on his triumphs and not his indiscretions, but it's unlikely. Edwards' latest appearances in the media have been about his affair and that's what the populace is going to want to hear about. His unfaithfulness, alleged sex tape, and bastard child is enough dirty laundry to get the legions of soap opera faithful off the couch and to the theater, so expect this movie, if made into a trashy exploitation piece, to make boatloads of cash. No cast or crew have been set. |
