Oz The Great And Powerful's Logo Revealed
In no way am I ready to support the ongoing wave of prequels, sequels, remakes and reboots flowing in and out of the Hollywood studio system, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t excited for Sam Raimi’s Oz the Great and Powerful. For starters, it takes a colossal pair of stones to attempt any material that draws a direct comparison to Victor Fleming’s 1939 classic, The Wizard of Oz. But since Raimi has compiled a cast list that includes James Franco, Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams, Mila Kunis and Zach Braff, we’re at least intrigued to see what Raimi can conjure.
None of the aforementioned actors leaked a logo that Raimi is using for Oz production materials, however. Instead, it was Mad Men actress Abigail Spencer who tweeted a photo of a sign taken on the set of Oz with the hashtag #thisishappening. Spencer plays Mrs. Hamilton in Raimi’s film, a woman who reportedly comes under the spell of a magician (Franco) as he is performing in Kansas. As the story will go, Franco’s character will ride in a hot air balloon that gets caught in a storm, transporting him to the magical land of Oz. Once there, in the land over the rainbow, he finds himself trapped in a power struggle between three witches (Williams, Weisz and Kunis). Nice place to be.
Here’s the photo, adorned with a snazzy Oz logo:
I doubt that title design will be incorporated later, with the “Z” encircled by the “O,” though. It doesn’t scream Oz. If anything, it suggests a Zorro sequel. Not that the studio will have much trouble selling this fantasy once it opens in March 2013, what with the amount of talent in front of the camera and Raimi back in the land of surreal make-believe, where he belongs.
